You may not know who Marie Robinson is, but you DEFINITELY know her clients. Emma Stone. Liv Tyler. Anne Hathaway. Kristen Stewart. My girl Sienna Miller. They ALL get their hair colour tended to by Marie, who is widely considered the best colourist in Manhattan (and that’s no small feat).
She’s also colour director for Clairol, which is how I got lucky enough to meet her when she was in town a little while ago. Seriously, it was a career highlight—because as you may know, I’m somewhat obsessed with hair colour, both my own and others’. (In fact, the strawberry blonde was totally Marie-inspired, since you know I had to ask her for advice at the end of the interview. Yes, I am neurotic enough to always do this… but in this case, I think it paid off marvelously, if I don’t say so myself.)
But that’s not the only reason to be excited! Contrary to what you might think, it’s experts like Marie who thrill a beauty ed—not the celebrities. (Have I ever told you about my interview with Christina Aguilera? Yeah, that was awkward.) Anyway, Marie is just so darned knowledgeable. Because I scored a zillion tips and insights, I’m posting not one but several vids on all things hair colour. We’ll start today with a look at the bestest shades on both the runways and celebs… and what to buy if you want to copy them at home. Here’s the vid: Keep reading »

Besides Chanel’s gorgeous twist on wingy eyeliner and blush, another makeup highlight from Paris Couture Week has to be the purple shadow at Valentino.
It has me asking myself: Self, why don’t you show the purples more love?
I mean, one could really argue that purple is actually a neutral, because it’s one of those colours that anyone can wear. They really can. (Brown, on the other hand, looks amazing on Hilary Duff, but as someone with a lot of pink undertones in her skin, I’ve never felt completely myself in it.) But purples, or more correctly, PLUMS, can flatter all skin tones—perhaps because they echo the natural hue of our lips. (And you already know that berry, which is in the same colour family, is the one universally flattering lip colour—yes?)
Let’s explore how it was done at Valentino (and also why purple on the eyelids is infinitely more flattering and easier to wear than purple on the mouth). Keep reading »
It’s Couture Week! And that means the few remaining designers who still do haute couture are showing off their wares to socialites and celebs alike, in Paris (of course).
The ironic thing about couture is that even though everything costs bajillions of dollars, it’s usually far too over-the-top—in its original runway form—for most people to ever wear. (Unless your name is Lady Gaga.) The same goes for makeup, most of the time… with the exception of our beloved Chanel. While Armani Privé is doing purple lipstick and Givenchy is sending models down the runway wearing Viking hats with antlers, Chanel does something SO simple yet SO beautiful, it blows everybody else out of the water.
Obviously I’m digging this because, as per yesterday’s post, I’m having an eyeliner moment. (And you know I love me some blush—any kind, any time, GIMME.) But besides the fact that this involves two of my pet product categories, there are a few points about this look that are different and exciting and perhaps things that you may wish to incorporate the next time you’re wielding an eye pencil.
