Afiya Francisco

You may recognize the gorgeous Afiya Francisco from TV shows like ET Canada, Steven & Chris and CityLine. The former LouLou magazine fashion editor is a frequent style commentator, writer and now blogger (at TheStyleHouse.ca). She’s also a new mom—and you better believe she’s a stylish one!

Since hair, makeup and all things beauty can be considered the finishing touch to a well-chosen outfit, I asked Afiya if she could share with us her favourite beauty products and tips today. I love her product picks and think you will too! So read on…

Queen LatifahBeauty Insider Credentials As a style commentator for shows like ET Canada, Steven & Chris and CityLine, print and my blog TheStyleHouse.ca, I have the good fortune of getting to preview the latest and greatest products. It’s interesting to see how beauty relates to fashion and the runway looks that designers send out to compliment their overall vision.

Beauty Icon My beauty icons are different than my fashion icons and are usually people who radiate good health; Queen Latifah is the first to come to mind. Mind you, at the opposite end of the spectrum, I love a good kohl-rimmed, day-after-partying look that I think Carine Roitfeld does well.

Mixed Chicks Leave-In ConditionerTop Five Beauty Products Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner—hands downs my fave hair product. I love that it gives some hold but is so lightweight. Moroccanoil oil treatment—my hair is as dry as the desert and this adds some sheen. Kiehl’s Crème de Corps—my skin drinks this up. Revlon Grow Luscious mascara—really makes lashes seem fuller and longer. Bio-Oil—best thing to prevent stretch marks ever.

Beauty Splurge I think that good hair conditioner is worth the investment.

Beauty Bargain Save your money on less expensive mascara.

First Fragrance White Musk from The Body Shop. Mmm I can still remember the scent.

Bond No. 9 New York Fire IslandCurrent Fragrance Bond No. 9 Fire Island smells summery yet musky all at once. [Editor's note: I wear this too! It's one of my favourite summer scents.]

Biggest Beauty Fail Grade 5: bangs and curly hair, enough said. There was also a stage that my husband refers to as my “Square Hair” days. Just as the name suggests, I somehow managed to turn my hair into a block.

Beauty Pet Peeve Sperm-shaped eyebrows. Not so much a pet peeve; I just have to ask why.

Best Beauty Tip Moisturize. My mom imparted the importance of this to me and she has the best skin, so I’ll take her word for it.

Career Advice Be prepared to work for free (or very little) when you’re starting out. Internships and volunteering are the best ways to strengthen your resume, meet people and ultimately break into the industry.

Don’t forget to check out Afiya’s blog, TheStyleHouse.ca. You can also follow her on not one but TWO Twitter addresses: @TheStyleHouse and @StyleAgent_A.

Stay tuned for next week’s Babe, makeup artist Diana Carreiro!

Hollywood makeup artist Lise Kuhr

If you’ve been paying attention, you know that having an even skin tone has emerged as a BIG beauty goal these days.

So instead of wrinkles—which are, let’s face it, pretty tough to do anything about once they appear—it’s sun damage, hyperpigmentation, post-acne marks and redness that you want to erase with your skincare regimen. It’s all about having glowy, luminous skin—so what if you’ve got a few lines here and there?

Meet Emmy and Gemini Award-nominated makeup artist Lise Kuhr, whose recent credits include working with Dakota Fanning on the set of Twilight: Eclipse. Lise also works with Bio-Oil and was recently in town to talk about how you can treat skin discolourations—or at least cover them with makeup until they fade. Here’s our Q&A:

Q. What’s a good skincare regimen for someone concerned about evening out her skin tone?

A. “Improving the appearance of uneven tone can be a huge confidence booster for any woman, but you don’t have to spend like a movie star to buy a quality skincare product.

“I love Bio-Oil because it’s affordable, quickly absorbs and is one of the best products around for helping to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. Apply it twice daily, massaging in a circular motion, for a minimum of three months.

“Something that I recommend for everyone is being diligent about taking a multi-vitamin daily, and being aware of any deficiencies you might have, such as iron. As you heal your skin with a topical application, also nourish your body’s ability to heal more quickly from the inside out.”

Q. What’s the best way to hide skin discolourations with makeup?

A. “Before I get to covering specific areas of discolouration, I generally start with a foundation, as this alone will often sufficiently cover some of the less pronounced discoloured areas.

“Once the foundation is on, I have a better idea of which product I will need to hide the still-visible spots of concern. Some concealers are highly pigmented and opaque, whereas others will be quite sheer in contrast. To customize a concealer for yourself, you can always mix a little of your foundation to your concealer of choice.

“When covering brown spots, a concealer with a pink undertone can be very effective. If your post-acne scars are still red, a concealer with yellow undertones will be your best choice.

“When discoloured areas are hidden, set your make-up with a light powder, as this will help protect it and give longevity.”

Q. What are your insider tips for keeping skin looking great?

A. “Keeping your skin looking great doesn’t have to be that difficult. I live by these five simple tips:

Live Well: Getting your beauty sleep is probably one of the easiest ways to keep yourself looking great. Other lifestyle choices, like reducing stress and eating properly, can also contribute to an overall look of well-being.

Cleanse, Exfoliate and Moisturize: Find a daily skin care routine that works for you and stick to it. And remember – always wash your face before bed.

Protect Skin from the Sun: If you’re going to be spending time in the sun, you need to protect your skin. Wear a hat, stay in the shade or apply sun block. Excessive exposure to the sun can lead to premature aging, sunburns and even skin cancer.

No Smoking: Stopping smoking at any age will improve your outward appearance. If you decide to quit, take the opportunity to adopt habits like regular exercise.

Stay Hydrated: Dehydration starves skin of one of its most vital nutrients. Start drinking water first thing in the morning and continue to replenish throughout the day.”

Post image for Beauty Insider: Liza Elliott-Ramirez, Founder of Expecting Models

I don’t have kids yet, so I’m not exactly an expert on beauty for pregnant moms. But that’s why I’m delighted to share a Q&A I had with mom and ex-model Liza Elliott-Ramirez. Based in New York, Liza runs Expecting Models, a modelling agency entirely devoted to pregnant models, AND she stars in the reality show Runway Moms (which is coming soon to Canada!). She’s also a big fan of Bio-Oil, the cult-favourite scar/stretch mark/uneven skin tone oil (they hosted her trip to T.O.).

Here’s what Liza had to say about modelling, reality TV and looking good during and post-pregnancy: Keep reading »
