Brigitte Bardot

Milan Fashion Week Fall 2011 D&G beauty

I have a theory. You know how Cleopatra, Brigitte Bardot and Angelina Jolie are all considered not just icons of beauty but also (if I may be frank) sexiness? Well, I think it has to do with their eyeliner.

Specifically, their cat-eye look. It nevah, evah goes out of style—and it magically makes your eyes look bigger and your lashes thicker. The extended feline flick, of course, is what takes it from everyday, run-of-the-mill eyeliner to sexy seductive. RAWR!

Problem is, it’s one of the toughest beauty tricks to master. Right up there with curling your hair and applying fake tanner, I’d say. I’ve been giving this look a time out for the past few months, but with holiday party season about to start in T minus two days, I’m ready to bust out some of my pet tricks (collected from all the times I’ve interviewed makeup artists about this, and now implanted in my brain). So, because sharing is caring, here they are… Keep reading »

Elizabeth

Gentle Reader. I’ve only been writing this blog since 2009, but already I feel like we’ve been through so much. There was the great Ombré experiment of 2010, our many attempts to get the perfect non-Eagle application of foundation and powder, that time when I went off on medium tones, and of course, my incessant babbling about OMGcodliveroil. It’s kind of like we’re in a relationship—which is why I don’t take the idea of threesomes lightly.

Did I just cross a line? What I mean is that there are three of us now: you, me and brand-new BEAUTYEDITOR.ca contributor Elizabeth Oborne, who you may have noticed was the author of several awesome recent articles—including this one on the wonders of coconut oil, this list of what to pack when you travel and this post on how fabulous infrared saunas are for your skin and body. You already know that she used to work as a flight attendant on private jets (!). But here’s a little bit more intel: Elizabeth is now based out of Vancouver, where she recently completed her B.A. as well as a certificate in magazine publishing and a registered Holistic Nutrition diploma. It’s the latter (as well as her fabulous writing) that makes her a kindred spirit, because as you know, I’m a closet health geek myself.

So I think it’s high time you guys met. I’m a firm believer that you don’t REALLY know someone until you peek inside her makeup bag (and I’m not even kidding), so here’s a little beauty Q&A—I’m the Q, Elizabeth is the A—to help you guys get acquainted. Keep reading »

Sally Hershberger lounge Toronto International Film Festival 2011

Forget the celebs, parties, premieres and free swag. Possibly the most exciting thing to happen to me during this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was getting Sally Hershberger-ized by her her right-hand men, James Vides and Mike Viggue.

Both are hairstylists from Sally’s downtown NYC salon. Both are cute. Both are straight. In the words of my friend Jill (from the website 29 Secrets), “it’s like finding two unicorns.”

Sally, of course, was in town for TIFF too. (Some might say I’ve been working WAY too long in beauty, because I actually found it more thrilling to see/meet her than to come within a couple feet of Clive Owen. Others, such as Janine, might disagree, of course. Her and Clive-O are tight. If it were a contest between Sally and Jon Hamm, well, that’s another story…) Keep reading »
