Christian Dior - Spring 2011 makeup

Most days, when I walk around my neighbourhood lately, I can count at least five or ten girls wearing red, yellow or mint-green jeans. (Which is why I may pass on this trend, but we’ll see.) I’m talking about colour-blocking. It’s huge this spring in fashion, and it’s all about wearing two—or more—different solid colours, preferably bright ones, in one outfit.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before people would start to talk about colour-blocking with makeup. And this is the subject I delved into yesterday at the America’s Next Top Model Live event in Toronto, where I was part of a beauty panel on the French Connection Style Stage, with Jill from 29 Secrets and Elaine from Toronto Beauty Reviews. Not surprisingly, I had a lot to say. (Too much, really. Sometimes it occurs to me just how much of my brain space is occupied by obscure beauty facts, and that it is not normal.)

Anyway, let me share—and then I wanna know what YOU think. Keep reading »

Jason Wu - Spring 2012 lipstick

Remember when fashion had rules? Like no white after Labour Day, and not mixing your metals, and having to match your shoes with your handbag? Then all of that went out the window—VERY out the window—and now I feel like the same thing is happening in Beauty Land.

It’s red lips of which I speak, and they used to be strictly fall/winter territory. I know this because every time I wrote a magazine beauty trend round-up, red lips were inevitably in there. (Do they count as a trend if they happen every single year?) Anyway, then we’d all switch to pretty pastels from May through August. Of course, things started to change with the whole fuchsia and orange lipstick craze of 2010 and 2011. And now, it seems, beauty has finally caught up with fashion. Red lips have officially arrived as a valid warm-weather option… which means there really aren’t any colour rules, or seasons anymore.

Know what else it means? There’s a red lip for everyone. EVERYONE! Let’s take a look at some runway and real-life examples (and why they work) to get inspired. Keep reading »

Christian Dior - SS12 makeup

Ten years ago, The Bachelor was in its first season, we all thought super-low-rise jeans looked cool (we were SO mistaken)… and our lip product choices were seriously, sadly, limited. Do you remember? You either wore goopy, sticky gloss; drying, heavy, too-dark lipstick; or a plain colourless balm like Blistex.

It warms my heart just thinking about how far we’ve come. Glosses are getting less goopy—in fact, many have morphed into the new gloss-balm category I talked about in this post. Lipsticks are way balmier—as the French say, they’re more “comfortable”—and in some cases have merged completely into sheer, hybrid tinted balm formats. We’re even seeing a new form of lip stain that’s also…wait for it… glossy.

Does this excite you? It should. Here’s a look at the major spring lip launches that you need to know about. Keep reading »
