Golden Globes 2012 - Zooey Deschanel

Here we go! It’s your GG beauty coverage—and my goodness, there are a lot of celebs to view and discuss! (Um, 25, to be exact.)

My overall observation? There was a lot more experimentation going on with the hair than the makeup. And of course, as is the case with every awards show, a whole bunch of celebs stuck with the can’t-go-wrong updo and nude makeup combo. It’s boring for beauty editors, but it works.

Shall we do something different this time and start with my least favourite looks first? (You know, the automatic ABORT ABORT ABORTs.) Then, we’ll talk about the mushy middle, and finally get to my favourites of the night. Let’s dig in! Keep reading »

2011 Emmy Awards - Minka Kelly

So the Emmys happened. And half of the attendees collaborated to make sure they were all wearing red dresses, apparently. Weird. (Or maybe SMART, because you just know all of those women are going to land on some trend page in every magazine. Can you say guaranteed coverage?)

Anyway, since this is our equivalent of a trend page, we need to cover—as we always do—the best hair and makeup of the night. Overall, it wasn’t a bad showing, although there isn’t anyone that blew me away (aside from Minka Kelly, who I really should talk about more because she is so incredibly gorgeous). Mainly, I liked individual elements of each person’s look—but only a rare few were head-to-cleavage perfection. (Not head-to-toe, see, because we don’t talk about fashion here.) And then there were the four peeps that I just can’t wrap my head around. Maybe you can help me. We’ll start with the top 10: Keep reading »

Claire Danes slicked back hair

This photo of Claire Danes—which yes, we’ve discussed at length before—is how I look when I use (most) products designed for damaged, colour-treated hair. Because dontcha know? People with damaged hair need all the extra moisturizing ingredients they can get… even if their hair ends up unattractively plastered to their scalps.

At least that was the old way of hair company beautythink. It’s ridiculous, isn’t it? Especially if you are like me and at least 50 percent of the reason why you colour your hair in the first place is because your hair is so fine that you’re desperate for the damage in order to give your hair some kind of semblance of volume. For years now, I’ve ignored hairdressers’ advice about using colour-specific shampoos and conditioners because frankly, I’d rather just deal with colour-fade and damage and frizz and flyaways than feel like I need to wash my hair by 4pm each day.

But things are changing! Suddenly, I’m noticing a bounty of products Just For People Like Us. Meaning, stuff that won’t screw with your colour, and with extra fortifying ingredients to counteract all the chemicals and heat-styling… but with the end goal of ALSO giving you volume. It’s like a beauty miracle! I figured you’d be down with this development, so let’s take a look: Keep reading »
