Vera Wang - FW12 makeup

Even though I’m more of a single-serving makeup kind of girl, there’s something about a pretty palette that makes me swoon. But it’s not just their obvious cuteness that gets me. I look at their expertly coordinating shades, all organized in neat little rows, and imagine that using them will make my life equally organized and therefore better.

It’s the little things.

Anyway, to celebrate spring’s impending arrival (let’s hope!), here my top 10 picks. Most (all?) are limited-edition, so run; don’t walk. Keep reading »

glasses

Like my new glasses? Yes, I know, I’m a few seasons late to the gigantic hipstery eyeglasses trend—but I don’t care. I feel the same way about them as I did skinny jeans: it may have taken me a while to embrace the new silhouette, but once I did, there was simply no going back. (Even if they’re telling us to wear wide legs for fall.)

And if I may make another skinny jeans comparison? You know how many so-called fashun experts preach that curvy girls should avoid the skinnies in favour of boot-leg jeans (which I SWEAR are way less flattering)? Well, it’s the same thing in eyewear. Every time I’ve gone to get new glasses, the optician steers me toward the boring 1990s frames (which “suit my face”) and away from the statement glasses that I really wanted.

Well, not this time. THANK YOU MONIKA SCHNARRE, Canada’s first supermodel. You see, she’s all grown up now (age 40—how did that happen?) and just came out with her very own eyewear collection in partnership with Optiq Frames. Each pair runs about $200 and I was invited to select one—happy, happy day!—so of course I went for these. Then I got to interview Monika herself and she confirmed that there are no more rules about choosing your frames (a theme that you know I love, whether in eyewear or in makeup). Here’s our Q&A on glasses trends, beauty tips and more… Keep reading »

sunscreen face

There are two annual topics that every women’s magazine always runs, but which beauty editors always kind of dread. One is the typical winter skincare story (which I attempted to cover in this post—the products change but the advice stays the same). And the other is the yearly sunscreen article in which the author kinda sorta b*tchslaps the audience (how nice!) for not knowing the difference between UVA and UVB, or that you still need to re-apply even an SPF 100 every two hours.

But seriously, do you even READ those pieces? Honestly, I can’t really blame you for sun protection ignorance because those stories especially can be very preachy and/or boring. (Except for the one I wrote this year, of course, which is called “The Tan Commandments” and is in the June issue of FLARE. Go buy it!)

Anyway, that doesn’t mean we won’t still be tackling the sun protection beast on this here blog. I’m just going to break it all down into nice, tasty, bite-sized beauty chunks (in the spirit of what BEAUTYEDITOR.ca is all about!). First up, we talked about the fact that you DO need to re-apply your sunscreen every two hours—and I gave you some options on how to get around this unfortunate reality without ruining your makeup. Today, we’re going to address mineral sunscreens: why you might want one and the prodz that I think are the best. Keep reading »
