Stella McCartney - FW12 makeup

WELL. After all the beauty WTF-ery in Milan, we’re getting a taste of it from Paris too. The biggest of the big four—Paris Fashion Week—wrapped up last week… and ooh la la, it was one of the most experimental in beauty history. I might need to lie down.

The thing is, though, that even though I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing most of these looks on the street, I’m still a fangirl for the creativity and artistry behind them. The models look weird, yes, but there’s a cool factor here. (I can’t say the same for, say, Roberto Cavalli’s rainbow eyeshadow or Fendi’s wet braided pigtails in Milan. Sorry Milan.)

So keep in mind that these are meant to shock and awe, and then take a look at five major trends that will direct what we do with our makeup (and hair) in the coming months: Keep reading »

Woman applying concealer

Just like you need a shoe wardrobe and a jeans wardrobe and, arguably, a white T-shirt wardrobe, today I would like to establish that you need one more type of wardrobe in your life: a concealer wardrobe.

After all, I consider myself a bit of a concealer connaisseur. It’s the one product I won’t leave the house without (although blush is a close second) and the one product that I feel makes the biggest overall difference in your appearance. You might have a flaming red pimple that needs the most heavy-duty coverage possible. Or you need to camo some dark circles and want to throw some brightening action in the mix. See what I mean? Come take a peek at all the concealers I’ve known and loved… Keep reading »

New York Fashion Week Fall 2011 Vera Wang makeup

As if the orange eyeshadow thing wasn’t scary enough. At New York Fashion Week, I noticed a second eyeshadow trend—one that’s been brewing for a while now, if you’ve been paying attention. (Hint: We saw inklings of it at Chanel, Giorgio Armani and Oscar de la Renta for S/S ’11.)

What I’m talking about is not the colour but the placement of it, which is all the way around the eyes AND all the way up to the brows.

You heard me. There’s none of this timid, dainty, just-darkening-the-lash-line business or the Old Skool tone-on-tone contouring of the crease. (Even if—like me and 99 percent of the Asian population—you don’t actually possess a crease.)

Nope. The eyeshadow gods are saying “MORE!!!!” And so who are we to displease them? Here are a few of the heavy-handed looks from Vera Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, L’Wren Scott and Narciso Rodriguez. And surprise! They work on all eye shapes. Keep reading »
