Pre-beauty editor era, one of my favourite activities used to be late-night trips to Shoppers Drug Mart to troll the aisles of the makeup section (where I’d inevitably scoop up a dozen or so sweet prodz for a fraction of what you’d pay at a department store). It’s like the female Canadian Tire, right? Or Vegas—time kind of stops and you could spend hours in there.
Now, of course, makeup (and every other beauty category known to woman) shows up at my doorstep, so I’ve had to retire that pastime. But you know what? I still get a little thrill when I come across drugstore things that WORK.
The latest area to impress me is skin-perfecting stuff. Foundation, primer, powder, concealer. Like I keep saying, the beauty brands are getting way smarter—so you no longer need to sacrifice performance, or texture, or skincare benefits, for a cheapo price. Ten years ago, The Bachelor was in its first season, we all thought super-low-rise jeans looked cool (we were SO mistaken)… and our lip product choices were seriously, sadly, limited. Do you remember? You either wore goopy, sticky gloss; drying, heavy, too-dark lipstick; or a plain colourless balm like Blistex.

Lipsticks are way balmier—as the French say, they’re more “comfortable”—and in some cases have merged completely into sheer, hybrid tinted balm formats. We’re even seeing a new form of lip stain that’s also…wait for it… glossy.
Does this excite you? It should. Here’s a look at the major spring lip launches that you need to know about. Keep reading »
WELL. After all the beauty WTF-ery in Milan, we’re getting a taste of it from Paris too. The biggest of the big four—Paris Fashion Week—wrapped up last week… and ooh la la, it was one of the most experimental in beauty history. I might need to lie down.
The thing is, though, that even though I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing most of these looks on the street, I’m still a fangirl for the creativity and artistry behind them. The models look weird, yes, but there’s a cool factor here. (I can’t say the same for, say, Roberto Cavalli’s rainbow eyeshadow or Fendi’s wet braided pigtails in Milan. Sorry Milan.)
So keep in mind that these are meant to shock and awe, and then take a look at five major trends that will direct what we do with our makeup (and hair) in the coming months: Keep reading »
