Dior

M.A.C Rodarte makeup collection

M.A.C’s Rodarte collection is out in September—catch up on the controversy over the product names (now resolved, thankfully) and check out the ghostly glam shades. [Pop Champagne]

Get a sneak peek at Dior’s fall makeup collection—it’s a cool palette with lots of charcoals, plums and mauves. [Beauty Crazed]

Although some are better than others, I generally don’t like to wear mainstream fragrances (Guaiac by Red Flower is my secret scent of choice). Now Lucky Penny is letting us in on HER secret scent. Rose and rhubarb? I’m in! [Lucky Penny]

Even though I’m always recommending makeup here, I LOVE that Lisa advocates for going bare-faced. (Well, give or take a couple of products.) It’s easy to fall prey to the idea that you need a full face of foundation, powder, etc., but most of us don’t—at least not on a daily basis—and your skin will probably thank you. Low-key makeup not your bag? Here’s a fun demo of bold, bright eyeshadow. Somehow it works! [M.A.C.nunu]

Kim Vallée

We’re heading to Montreal today for a chat with this week’s Babe in the Biz, Kim Vallée. If you’re into design, home decor and entertaining, you’re likely to be already familiar with Kim’s site, At Home with Kim Vallée. And if you’re more of a web geek type, you may know that she also produces On the Web with Kim Vallée, a site dedicated to blogging and social media. Talk about multitasking! And she does it well—in 2009, she was named one of the top 25 web stars in Quebec. (Kim came in at number five!)

Kim’s also a part of the Style Collective, the independent Canadian web publishers collective (BeautyEditor.ca is a member too). And because sometimes the best beauty gems come from women who aren’t living and breathing beauty 24/7 like I am, I thought I’d seek out Kim for some insight into the beauty products and tips that she loves most:

Dior Addict 2Beauty Insider Credentials My mother, who owned a successful beauty salon, raised me to be a beauty insider. She used to bring me at trade conventions and shows. When I was four years old, I would go to her salon after she closed her shop to wash and style the hair of all my dolls. I did that every week for a long time. I selected design (Web design, interior design and event design) as a career. I went to design because you use your creativity but it also requires excellent analytical skills and synthesis. Since 2007, I am the editor of At Home with Kim Vallée, a blog on stylish living and entertaining. I just launched a new company called Media Sidekick. We are a new breed of ad network for bloggers and influencers that goes beyond the traditional banners.

Beauty Icon I do not have a beauty icon per se. [But] elegance, happiness and assurance are essential characteristics.

Top Five Beauty Products There are so many that it is hard to only select five. But I did it!

Dove soap

The first one can seem strange but it is Dove. I’ve used Dove to wash my body since university. I have dry skin and I found it works the best for me. I sometimes switch to a traditional Savon de Marseille, but it is an indulgence.

Prada fragrance

I wear perfume every day even regardless of what my plans are for the day.

Make Up For Ever Sens’eyes Waterproof Sensitive Eyes Cleanser

Sens’eyes Waterproof Sensitive Eyes Cleanser by Make Up For Ever. It is the fastest way to completely remove your eye makeup, including waterproof mascara and pencils. Fast and easy is what I look for with my cleansers before I go to bed late at night. The formula of Sens’eyes comes handy when I travel since you use a tissue to remove it.

Clarins moisturizing cream

My Clarins moisturizing creams. I tried several brands over the years but I always go back to Clarins. It performs well. I like their smell and textures on my skin. You will find many Clarins facial products inside my bathroom cabinet.

Kerastase Oleo Relax

Lastly, I could not be my mother’s daughter if I did not mention professional hair products. It may sound like an ad but it’s true: beauty hair starts with healthy hair.

Beauty Splurge I believe that we must splurge on the facial products that we put on to protect our skin. I do not want to take chances with those.

Beauty Bargain You can scrimp on makeup products because it is the way you apply your makeup that makes the biggest difference.

Cacharel Anais AnaisFirst Fragrance I think it was Anaïs Anaïs by Cacharel. I was probably 15 years old.

Current Fragrance Dior Addict 2 is what I put on during summer. The rest of the year, I go for the woody oriental scent of Prada. I like the rectangular Prada bottle in its soft pink box.

Biggest Beauty Fail When I look at some old photos, it’s evident that I am wearing the wrong colour of foundation. Too pink, or too pale… I learned my lesson. Now, I only buy my foundation from brands with lots of shades and hues. I will try it first, go home, and take a few pictures indoors and outdoors to validate the look. Then, I will buy it if it feels right.

Beauty Pet Peeve Waste in packaging. I stopped buying Chanel eye pencils and lips pencils because they include a sharpener in every box. No one needs a new sharpener every time she buys a pencil. I complained many times and decided that my best action as a customer was to bring my business elsewhere.

Lancome foundationBest Beauty Tip Wear what suits you, considering your body type and complexion. Then, see how you could integrate what is fashionable at the time. I learned that we should not follow all trends, regardless of how popular it is or how adorable it seems on others.

Career Advice I am happy to be an entrepreneur. It drives me to go further. If you are looking to become one, find something that you are passionate about and that you excel at, work towards excellence, surround yourself with talented people, and lastly, aim to innovate and reinvent your field.

Hope you enjoyed Kim’s very French take on beauty! Next week, it’s off to Vancouver for a chat with The Style Spy founder Erica Lam!

YSL summer makeup look 2010

More YSL to lust after!

The summer collection is out now and as usual, I’ve fallen under the YSL spell. (Maybe it’s this photo of Karlie Kloss. I am MESMERIZED.)

I think you’ll love what she’s selling too, though. (How great are these brights? Somehow they manage to make blue liner, purple nails and a coral lip—ALL WORN AT THE SAME TIME—look chic. I don’t know how they do it but I want IN.)

YSL was nice enough to send me a few things to try (I love you longtime, YSL!). Here are my top picks:

YSL Gloss Pur Pure Lip Gloss in No. 8 – Pure Watermelon ($34)

YSL Gloss Pur Pure Lip Gloss in No. 8 - Pure WatermelonThis is what Karlie’s wearing in the pic above: a highly pigmented gloss that ironically, smells like watermelon too (that’s YSL’s signature fruity makeup scent). I know I’m more about the lipsticks lately, but this gloss is so saturated with colour (a creamy, pinky coral) that I make an exception. A delight to wear, truly. (And available in three other new colours, all permanent additions to the basic collection.)

YSL Terre Saharienne Poudre de Soleil Bronzing Powder SPF 12 in Sand ($60)

YSL Terre Saharienne Bronzing Powder SPF 12

I’m slowly getting over my fear of bronzing powders (I’m so pale that I worry they’ll make me look like a Jersey Shore cast member). This one, in Sand, is so barely there, it’s perfect for ghostly white girls like me. It’s got some pinky pigment too, so you end up with a lovely healthy glow that’s not at all overdone. It’s available in two other shades (both new basic products).

YSL Fard Lumière Aquarésistant Water-Resistant Eye Shadow in No. 5 – Golden Sands ($35)

YSL Fard Lumiere Aquaresistant Water-Resistant Eye Shadow Golden Sands

As you may know, one of my all-time fave products is Dior’s shimmery, waterproof shadow-in-a-pot. Well, move over, Dior, because this one rivals it in finish and longevity. It’s a shimmery, golden cream shadow (much more liquid-y than Dior’s) that you apply with a little brush. SO, SO gorgeous along the upper and lower lashline. It’s a new staple in my makeup bag. (And if you want to go more daring, Karlie’s wearing the limited-edition version in No. 19 – Riviera Blue in the pic above.)

YSL La Laque Long-Lasting Nail Lacquer in No. 142 – Ultra Orange ($24, limited edition)

YSL La Laque Long-Lasting Nail Lacquer in No. 142 - Ultra Orange

This summer, I’ve been into orangey shades in a big way for my pedicures. (And when they’re on your toenails or fingernails instead of your lips, you don’t have to worry about them making your teeth look yellow, etc.) Seriously, try this—I never thought I was an orange kind of girl, but it’s really pretty and unexpected.

YSL Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick SPF 15 in No. 94 – Blood Orange ($35, limited edition)

YSL Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick SPF 15 in No. 94 - Blood Orange

Another orange for you—but again, so incredibly wearable I plan to rock this shade all summer. (Trust me; I would not steer you wrong!) What makes it work? It’s a very sheer shade with lots of pink in it and a very slight hint of shimmer. And it’s bright, but not too bright—just enough to make your entire face look fresh and young and summery. Honestly, it’s another new fave.

Fellow YSL addicts? Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried any of these (or plan to)!
