Elizabeth Olsen - Silent House premiere 2012

Fact: meeting celebrity hairdressers and makeup artists is usually more exciting (at least for beauty editors) than meeting the actual celebrities themselves. I know this is hard to believe and yes, getting to see the Beckhams or Christina Aguilera up close makes for a good story to tell your friends. But you know what? They’re boring. It’s all scripted. The people with the REAL dirt—or at least, really good tips that you can actually use—are the ones who do the hair and makeup.

Which brings me to the man I met this morning, Mark Townsend. Very unassuming, super-nice guy… who only styles the hair of everyone who matters in Hollywood. Seriously, let me just give you a client list: all of the Olsen sisters (including the adorable Elizabeth above), Jennifer Lawrence, Rachel McAdams, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Diane Kruger… well, I could go on but you get the idea.

Know what else is impressive about Mark? Well, I should mention he’s the official celebrity stylist for Dove. And this is exciting: I figured out during the interview that he is basically responsible for the entire dry shampoo revival of the past few years. Except that he thinks you could probably use even MORE of it, and MORE often. So listen up! Keep reading »

Jennifer Lawrence - Hunger Games premiere LA

Oh Em Gee. THIS IS THE WEEK. The week that the first movie in The Hunger Games trilogy hits theatres. I haven’t even read the books yet (well, I’ve got four days still) and I’m beside myself with excitement! It’s going to be like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter all over again. Except probably better.

Also? If you didn’t know who Jennifer Lawrence was before, you will now. She plays the heroine Katniss—and let’s just say that with the books selling 23 million copies and counting, Jen’s about to be launched into international super-stardom.

Here at BEAUTY EDITOR HQ, of course, we love nothing more than a little beauty retrospective. (I also have a soft spot for Jennifer because we have the exact same type of eyelid crease. Meaning non-existent. So sue me—these are the things I pay attention to.) Anyway, let’s get acquainted with this budding beauty star by taking a look at her red carpet looks of past and present… Keep reading »

curly hair women

Editor’s note: Curly hair peeps! I know I’ve been ignoring you. Ever heard the phrase “write about what you know?” Well, I know nothing about curly hair. My hair couldn’t hold a curl to save its life. Luckily, we’ve got new BEAUTYEDITOR.ca contributor Jasmine Kabiling to share her super awesome tips. Take it away, Jasmine!

If you have thick, frizz-prone, naturally wavy/curly hair like myself, then you know it’s what bad hair days and the most volatile love-hate relationships are made of. My hair and I love each other right now (I’ll explain how this came to be in a bit), but believe me when I say that there are days when I long for straight, silky hair so I can simply get up and go in the mornings without having to deal with the Chewbacca-Medusa lovechild that decided to make its home atop my head overnight.

I can’t say that I don’t get a little jealous when I watch tutorial vids on achieving perfect Victoria’s Secret Angel hair or those gorgeous brushed-out waves, but only because it requires having somewhat straight hair to work with. My initial thought is always: “Ugh, I have to straighten my hair first? Sew. Much. Werk.” Yeah, lazy people with curly hair problems, I know. Sigh.

But listen, you CAN be lazy low-maintenance and still have beautiful hair with minimal effort. Keep reading »
