Vapour Organic Beauty

You know if beauty editors at Allure, Lucky, More, BlackBook, Redbook, New Beauty and BellaSugar are raving about something, it’s GOT to be good.

Now you can add me to that list because I’ve completely fallen for Vapour Organic Beauty’s fantastically easy-to-use makeup. So much so that it falls into the very rare category (for a beauty editor who gets freebies all the time) of makeup that I’ll actually BUY when I run out.

Even though I heart a handful of other natural makeup lines—Josie Maran, Revolution Organics and Dr. Hauschka are all great—I’m usually underwhelmed by most of what’s out there. I love my makeup to be chemical-free and all, but if it doesn’t perform, there is no point.

Eric SakasBut what first caught my eye about this brand was its connection to the co-founder of Kevyn Aucoin Beauty, Eric Sakas. Eric was the business partner (and former boyfriend) of the late and great makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin. Now I haven’t tried too many things from the Kevyn Aucoin Beauty line, but what I HAVE tried has been amazing.

So you could say Eric has an eye for quality. And that’s how he came to know Vapour: he received an unlabelled sample of the then-fledgling line and was so blown away by the texture, performance and finish that he partnered with the manufacturer himself in order to bring a high-quality organic makeup line to women everywhere.

Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere FoundationThe star product (which I WILL buy again) is the Atmosphere Luminous Foundation ($41, vapourbeauty.com), which I mentioned the other day in my travel essentials post. It comes in a stick, which you just swipe in the areas where you need coverage, and then blend with your fingers. Could it be any easier? Now I never want to bother fiddling with liquid foundation, sponges and brushes again! I love everything about this: the texture (it glides easily but is not silicone-y), the coverage (not too much or too little), the purity (it’s 100% natural and chemical-free) and the formulation (it doesn’t settle into fine lines AND it’s got oil-controlling silica).

Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Multi Use BlushAlso great are the blushes—like the foundations, they come in chubby sticks that you just swipe on and blend with your fingers. If you like flat colours, go for the Aura Multi-Use Blush for Lips, Cheeks and Eyes ($32.50, vapourbeauty.com). The Aura Radiant Blush ($32.50, vapourbeauty.com) has a bit of sparkle.

They even make a little eyeshadow stick, which is a format I’ve never seen before! The Mesmerize Eye Color ($18.25, vapourbeauty.com) is, again, great for travel and gives you that smudgy eye look. They even have something called the Stratus Instant Skin Perfector ($40, vapourbeauty.com), which you apply under foundation to brighten and even out your skin tone.

So basically? I want EVERYTHING in this line. (Well, except for the lip gloss—my sample separated so now all I’m getting out is the clear oily stuff, no colour.)

You can buy Vapour Organic Beauty in Canada exclusively through The Shopping Channel (theshoppingchannel.com).

Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried anything from this line and if so, how you liked it!

Dr. Hauschka Summer Impressions Bronzing Fluid

Call me a late bloomer, but I’m only just coming around to this whole bronzer thing. Probably the main reason I sat out the JLo years—when being über-tanned was de rigueur—was because they used to make bronzing products with so much sparkle and pigment that it scared me away.

The powders they make now—like Josie Maran‘s bronzer—are much improved, although I can’t say I’m in the habit of using them every day. However, I am totally down with THIS product: Dr. Hauschka Summer Impressions Bronzing Fluid ($29.95, drhauschka.ca).

Let’s call it Bronzer for Dummies.

Here’s the deal: it’s a fluid that you can either mix with your moisturizer or just dab on in the spots where you want a bit of colour (you know the drill—the highest planes of your face, where the sun would naturally hit).

I’ve been using the lightest shade, Beige, and trust me—it would work on even the palest of complexions. It’s hard to describe, but you end up with this verrrrrry subtle golden glow that picks up the light ever so slightly (but no sparkly bits).

Personally, I find it far less tricky (and screw-up-able) than powders, since you can spread it around with your fingers. And it sinks in quickly for a natural skin finish (sometimes powders can look cakey). Just top it off with some pink cream blush and you’re going to look gorgeous, dahling!

Like all Dr. Hauschka products, it’s made from natural pigments, plant extracts and minerals—no nasties—so if your skin is sensitive or acne-prone (or if you just like to avoid makeup chemicals), this would be an excellent choice.

ALSO: the scent is am-AZ-ing. Not sure what it is, but you will LOVE.

Now tell me: are you a Dr. Hauschka fan? Have you tried their makeup before? What do you use?

For reals? This makeup is from… Mary Kay?

Mary Kay Cheek Glaze in Pomegranate

I’m not sure why, but in the 5+ years I’ve been in this business, I never actually laid eyes on any products from Mary Kay (marykay.ca). Nor did I seek them out—like other direct sellers, including Avon, you have to buy through a consultant (in person or online), so I pretty much wrote them off as “not for me.” (I don’t know about you, but I sort of shy away at the idea of having to go through a salesperson to buy stuff, lest they try to “upsell me,” etc.) Plus (and sorry Mary Kay PR), but the brand just didn’t have that trendy of an image.

But you know what? I think I was missing out, because Mary Kay just sent me some products and they ROCK. Keep reading »
