One of the problems (as in, #beautyeditorproblems) with writing for magazines AND maintaining a beauty blog is that I write magazine articles so far in advance that by the time I’ll allowed to cover certain trends here, my attention has drifted elsewhere. SORRY GUYS. This is what’s happened with BB Creams—a brand new beauty category that has recently arrived in Canada, and which I wrote about all the way back in the summer for fall issues of ELLE Canada and FLARE.
But today I realized, gosh, I haven’t even talked about them with you guys! Not very kind of me, I know. And unless you’re an early adopter (yay you!), you’re probably wondering what the heck this stuff even IS. Is it for blemishes? Is it a balm? What’s the difference between this and a tinted moisturizer? Can I ditch my foundation and concealer now?
So.Many.Questions. And I’m here to answer them. Here’s your BB Cream primer (ha! get it?), and how to decide if you need to embrace this trend. Keep reading »
Remember when buying mascara was as simple as strolling through the drugstore and picking up whatever Maybelline New York or CoverGirl product happened to be on sale that week? The decision was pretty much: Waterproof or Not Waterproof. Brown or Black.
Things are so much more complicated now. Not that I don’t still love the brands I wore in high school—but they’ve morphed into high-tech magic wands that share retail space with dozens and dozens of equally impressive-sounding formulas. It’s enough to make your brain hurt. But you know what? I swear to you that the mascara itself is only the first hurdle. Sure, it’s important to choose the right prodz (especially if your lashes are long but fine, and I’ll get to that in a sec). But the way you apply it can make a HUGE difference. I’ve collected a ton of tips over the years from makeup artists, brands, a reader and even my own mother (thanks Mom!), so today’s post is dedicating to helping you brush up (!) your technique. I know you’re probably contemplating your fall wardrobe about now (in which case, you should check out the Winners Runway department—they’ve got Prada and Dior boots if you like your designer footwear, and I really, really do). But while you’re stocking up on cold-weather apparatus, for the next little while here at BEAUTY EDITOR HQ we’re going to be looking forward… waaaay forward… to spring 2012.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Fashion Week beauty trends don’t require the same six-month lead time before adoption as, say, that handbag you spotted on the runway. Sure, Chanel might make us wait for the nail polish of the season, but usually we can play copycat and dive right in—even if designers are showing the hair and makeup with sundresses instead of winter coats.
So to kick things off, here’s a first look at what I’m spotting so far on the New York catwalks. Very exciting: bright lips are back again! Very frightening: designers are maybe encouraging us to go out with wet hair, Kate Bosworth-style streaks and/or enormous dark eyebrows. Yikes! Keep reading »
