Estée Lauder

orange eyeshadow spring summer 2011 New York

Just when we were easing into the idea of orange on our lips, those crazy designers shook things up again and decided we should ALSO wear orange on our eyelids.

You heard me—I said orange eyelids.

It’s sort of the new blue eyeshadow, if you will. Remember when it was an unspeakable, laughable makeup faux pas to even THINK about wearing blue eyeshadow?

That’s kind of the situation blue’s poor cousin orange finds itself in right now. But I think there is hope! Because when you see how pretty it can look, you might just wanna try this trend yourself—I know I do. Keep reading »

Gwyneth Paltrow

One thing you have to appreciate about Gwyneth Paltrow is that she doesn’t apologize for her rather enviable lot in life. She’s successful, beautiful, connected AND rich—so what of it, bidges?

This is especially apparent when you think about what most celebs will tell you when asked about their favourite beauty products. Don’t they always try to be “of the people” and talk about drugstore stuff? This is how Maybelline New York’s Great Lash mascara—a truly unremarkable mascara if there ever was one—became one of those cult products that everyone talks about.

But it turns out that Gwynnie, God love her, is a dedicated high-end beauty product aficionado. In case you didn’t catch her GOOP newsletter last week, she published a long list of the products she REALLY uses. And damn! Her picks are so stellar I just had to share them with you here:

Dr. Brandt Laser A-Peel System

Dr. Brandt Laser A-Peel System

This is supposed to mimic the effect of an in-office dermatological peel, but in a milder strength for home. Gwyneth says “it really works.”

Care by Stella McCartney Purifying Foaming Cleanser

Care by Stella McCartney Purifying Foaming Cleanser

Of course she uses this—Stella is one of her besties! I love a good foaming cleanser myself, and the fact that it’s organic is a bonus.

Rodin Olio Lusso

Rodin Olio Lusso Rodin is a cult beauty range created by ex-magazine editor and stylist Linda Rodin. When she couldn’t find a product good enough to use on the models and celebs she worked with, she created her own. Gwyneth says this chemical-free face oil—a blend of 11 essential oils and the star product in the line—will make your skin look “radiant.”

Intelligent Nutrients Anti-Aging Serum

and Anti-Aging Mist

Intelligent Nutrients Anti-Aging Mist

I’m not sure if this line is still sold in Canada, but if you can get your hands on it, I highly recommend snapping it up. I’ve loved it ever since I attended a launch presentation by the founder, Horst Rechelbacher, who also founded Aveda. Everything is so pure that you can actually drink the products (and Horst does, to demonstrate). Gwyneth says these two products will make your skin look “luminous.”

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel

and A.G.E. Interrupter

Skinceuticals A.G.E. Interrupter

and C E Ferulic

Skinceuticals C E FerulicAnother great choice by Ms. Paltrow. I’ve loved everything from SkinCeuticals that I’ve ever tried. The C E Ferulic is perhaps their most-loved product; it’s an antioxidant serum that you put on clean skin to protect against free radicals and build up your collagen (kind of like a skin insurance policy, if you will). Gwyneth says she uses this line mostly in the winter, when her skin is dry (but you could use the C E Ferulic year-round as it’s a serum).

Sonya Dakar NutraSphere

Sonya Dakar NutraSphere

Sonya is a facialist to the stars and Gwyneth says her new eco-friendly line, NutraSphere, “really works.” I can’t find any info on her site so not sure if it’s available just yet… but I’d be inclined to believe our Gwynnie. When I was in Cincinnati a few weeks ago with some U.S. beauty editors, I overheard one of them mention she was seeing Sonya. Her skin was INCREDIBLE. And she wasn’t wearing a stitch of makeup. So I’m a believer.

Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color

Tom Ford Private Blend Lip ColorDidn’t I tell you this line was amazing? It sounds like Gwyneth has the full 12 shades, although she says “I like to use bright lipstick when all the rest of my makeup is minimal.”

Chanel Écriture de Chanel Automatic Liquid Eyeliner

and Soleil Tan Sheer Illuminating Fluid

Chanel Soleil Tan Sheer Illuminating Fluid

Of course we can expect to see some Chanel on this list! I have both of these products. The liner is pretty great, as far as liquid liners go, and the illuminator has a nice, subtle glow. (Gwyneth uses it as a bronzer, but you could also mix it with your regular liquid foundation for an all-over glow.)

Laura Mercier Undercover Pot

Laura Mercier Undercover Pot

Laura Mercier pretty much owns it when it comes to makeup for your skin (foundations, concealers and powders). This is a three-part product: it contains her famous Secret Camouflage, Secret Concealer and a Translucent Setting Powder (remember when I mentioned how translucent powder is a good idea?). Gwyneth says “I find [this] is the ultimate blemish and under-eye circle cover-up.” WANT.

Estée Lauder TurboLash Mascara

Estée Lauder TurboLash Mascara

I haven’t tried this particular mascara, but it’s the vibrating kind and is meant to deliver the trifecta: volume, length AND curl.

Stila Convertible Color

Stila Convertible ColorAs you may know, I’ve recently become a Stila fan girl. (Check out my posts on their amazing lip stain and two multitasking makeup products for gorgeous, glowy skin.) As for this cream blush, Gwyneth says itblus “gives a nice glow.”

Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1

Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1Gwyneth says this lip balm is “permanently in my handbag.” So we have something in common, then!

Bobbi Brown Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm

Bobbi Brown Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm

and Everything Mascara

Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara

I think this rich balm would be ideal for drier skin types. Gwyneth calls it “the perfect foundation.” And last but not least, another mascara. Gwyneth says this is one of her “everyday essentials.”

SO. What do you think of Gwynnie’s beauty picks? She has expensive taste, no? Do you use any of these products—or now want them?

Estee Lauder Pure Color Blue Dahlia makeup Tom Pecheux collection 2010

I’m talking about the much-anticipated Blue Dahlia collection from Estée Lauder.

That’s Hilary Rhoda in the ad and how much does she make you want to paint the entire expanse of your eyelids navy blue—even though as recently as two years ago blue eyeshadow was still being tossed around as a major Beauty Don’t?

This is why I love beauty—just when you think something couldn’t be more wrong, visionary people like Mr. Tom Pecheux make it so, so right.

And who is Tom Pecheux, you ask? (Or maybe you didn’t ask—but I’m going to tell you anyway.)

This is him:

Tom Pecheux

He’s a makeup artist, obvs, and as of last November, the new Creative Makeup Director for Estée Lauder. And basically a legend in the business.

Remember these lips (at YSL)?

YSL black lip gloss

All Tom.

And more recently, he did the gorgeous makeup at the Derek Lam Fall 2010 show:

In fact, this look was his inspiration for his Estée range (his first full-colour collection for the brand).

There are two looks but Blue Dahlia, below, is the standout:

There’s also a really fab dark lip (called Midnight Bloom):

Everything is limited edition and out in August at select Estée Lauder counters (although I think I’ve already seen it at Holts).

What do you think of this collection? Are you brave enough to try a navy blue eye? Or do you prefer your navies on your nails…?
