There’s so much going on in beauty these days that it’s hard to keep up! Do you ever feel completely, totally overwhelmed when you step inside a Sephora or a Shoppers Drug Mart? I know I do—even though it’s kinda sorta my job to keep track of the dozens of cool-looking products hitting shelves every month. The always insightful BritishBeautyBlogger wrote a post recently called “Beauty Fatigue” that really hit home for me. It (and the comments) are a must-read for industry types, but I think what she’s saying is relevant for anyone with an interest in beauty these days: “I have never known a time when there were so many new products flooding onto the market or new launches, beauty presentations or ‘scientific findings’. [...] I’m quite often asked what drives me to feature a product and it’s almost impossible to say. It used to be amazing packaging, innovative concepts, value for money and beautiful colours. Now, I’m surrounded by all of things all of the time.”
Eeks! It’s SO true. And that doesn’t even take into account all of the celebrity beauty news, the mind-blowing tricks I pick up from interviewing hairdressers and makeup artists, and so on. THERE IS SO MUCH I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WITH YOU GUYS! And that’s why I’m gonna try something new today with a little Friday round-up of beauty tidbits—you know, a post dedicated to all the neat stuff that’s been going on in my world (and that I need to share before next week’s round of discoveries steals my attention). Come and dive in! Keep reading »
Whoa… what’s up with all the weird hair, Hollywood? In the past week or so, a whole bunch of celebs collectively decided to get a little crazy with the dye—and I’m talking the BLUE and PINK kind of crazy. The only explanation I can think of, even though I don’t really believe in astrology, is that there’s a Mercury Retrograde going on right now and it’s working its voodoo. (The old MR certainly manages to frig up all of my electronic devices, without fail, so it’s one planetary movement that I now reluctantly believe in. Does it impact beauty decisions? I have to think so.)
Not that blue or pink hair is necessarily terrible, when it’s done right. Oh yes, I actually do approve of this look in a couple of instances. (Although you won’t catch me sporting any of it, obviously.) That said, every new beauty triumph comes with its fair share of tragedies… so let’s analyze who gets a gold star and who gets a big fat FAIL. Keep reading »
Just the other day, Marina from Makeup4All made a comment here about wanting to put highlights in her dark hair—but hesitating, because she hasn’t found the right colourist.
And how right she is! (To hesitate.) While mousy, ashy light brown peeps like me find it so very easy to hit the bleach—it’s why I have blonderexia, after all—it’s a different story when you’re talking about adding highlights to brown hair. Hair that you want to STAY brown.
A lot of hairdressers don’t get that. And that’s how a lot of women end up walking around with too-light, too-obvious, too-streaky highlights. Which is the exact opposite of what’s coming ’round in hair for 2011 (if it ever really left): rich, warm, tone-on-tone hues.
And this brings me to our friend LC, who—wowza!—just joined the Brunette Club. Keep reading »
