Jason Wu - Spring 2012 lipstick

Remember when fashion had rules? Like no white after Labour Day, and not mixing your metals, and having to match your shoes with your handbag? Then all of that went out the window—VERY out the window—and now I feel like the same thing is happening in Beauty Land.

It’s red lips of which I speak, and they used to be strictly fall/winter territory. I know this because every time I wrote a magazine beauty trend round-up, red lips were inevitably in there. (Do they count as a trend if they happen every single year?) Anyway, then we’d all switch to pretty pastels from May through August. Of course, things started to change with the whole fuchsia and orange lipstick craze of 2010 and 2011. And now, it seems, beauty has finally caught up with fashion. Red lips have officially arrived as a valid warm-weather option… which means there really aren’t any colour rules, or seasons anymore.

Know what else it means? There’s a red lip for everyone. EVERYONE! Let’s take a look at some runway and real-life examples (and why they work) to get inspired. Keep reading »

Nicki Minaj Halloween costume

If you’re like me, you have a closet full of discarded Halloween props. Angel wings, a pitchfork, cowboy hat, cat ears and more than a few of those sequin eye masks. (What can I say? I like the classics.) But if you’re itching for something more creative, something more distinctly 2011, then I’ve got 10 celebrities you could most definitely channel.

All you need is a wig and some crazy makeup shades…  Keep reading »

Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrosio in Toronto

There’s so much going on in beauty these days that it’s hard to keep up! Do you ever feel completely, totally overwhelmed when you step inside a Sephora or a Shoppers Drug Mart? I know I do—even though it’s kinda sorta my job to keep track of the dozens of cool-looking products hitting shelves every month. The always insightful BritishBeautyBlogger wrote a post recently called “Beauty Fatigue” that really hit home for me. It (and the comments) are a must-read for industry types, but I think what she’s saying is relevant for anyone with an interest in beauty these days: “I have never known a time when there were so many new products flooding onto the market or new launches, beauty presentations or ‘scientific findings’. [...] I’m quite often asked what drives me to feature a product and it’s almost impossible to say. It used to be amazing packaging, innovative concepts, value for money and beautiful colours. Now, I’m surrounded by all of things all of the time.”

Eeks! It’s SO true. And that doesn’t even take into account all of the celebrity beauty news, the mind-blowing tricks I pick up from interviewing hairdressers and makeup artists, and so on. THERE IS SO MUCH I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WITH YOU GUYS! And that’s why I’m gonna try something new today with a little Friday round-up of beauty tidbits—you know, a post dedicated to all the neat stuff that’s been going on in my world (and that I need to share before next week’s round of discoveries steals my attention). Come and dive in! Keep reading »
