L’Oréal Paris

Kristen Bell Louis Vuitton party July 2010

I love me a punchy, bright lip—but am also the first to admit that in order to properly wear one, you’ve got to get a whole lot of other grooming things right. Such as: clear, even-toned skin, groomed brows, blush that coordinates (but not necessarily matchy-matchy). Really, it can be a lot. But that’s what you get when your lips scream “Look at me!” You’d best be ready for the attention.

So on days when you can’t be bothered with all of that (or maybe it’s just too darn hot outside), may I suggest a compromise? As Kristen Bell demonstrates (at a Louis Vuitton event last night), it’s lip gloss that looks bright in the tube

…but really is quite sheer and wearable on the lips. In other words, PERFECT for summer.

Here are a few standouts:

Chanel lip glosses in Laser and Pop

From Chanel’s summer collection, lip glosses in Pop (left) and Laser (right). NOTE: These are super sheer, so depending on how much you wanted to dial up the colour, you could layer them on top of a brighter lipstick (just apply and blot with a tissue before slicking on the gloss).

YSL Gloss Pur Pure Lip Gloss in No. 8 - Pure Watermelon

From YSL’s summer collection (which I raved about here), this shade is called Watermelon and is also the newest member of my Top Lip Glosses of All Time collection. It’s got quite a bit more pigment than the Chanel ones above—but honestly? So pretty for just about any skin tone.

L'Oreal Paris Infallible Plumping Lip Gloss in 306 Plumped Red

This L’Oréal Paris plumping number—the shade is Plumped Red and supposedly it lasts for six hours—is a bright, sparkly red in the tube. On your lips, it’s simply the perfect sheer red gloss.

Vasanti Lip & Cheek StainOkay, this Vasanti Cosmetics shade (the one on the right, above, called Beleza) isn’t a lip gloss but a lip stain. But I couldn’t help but include because it, too, gives you that barely-there hint of colour. Wear it alone or layer a clear gloss on top.

Now what about you—do you have any bright but sheer lip gloss faves I should know about?

flawless skin

I’m telling you, 2010 is the year of the primer.

On the heels of my post about 7 ways to stop shine on your face, I got an email from a reader—we’ll call her R.—wondering if I could recommend a primer specifically for flawless-looking skin.

Here’s an abridged version of our convo:

I was wondering if you might be able to help me find a good face primer.

What I want is what everyone wants: to look flawless. My main concern is hiding visible pores, but at the same time not clogging them up so I can avoid break outs—I don’t have a problem with acne, but I do get the occasional nuisance. I also have a bit of a problem with oil slicks in my T-zone, primarily my chin, so I need something that won’t add to the problem.

I’ve been using Benefit’s That Gal and I’ve been happy with it, but I just ran out and thought maybe there was something better out there. I use a powder foundation (Benefit’s Hello Flawless) if that makes any difference in picking a primer. I’m not looking to spend a ton of money on it; something close to the price of the Benefit product is great, which I think is a little under $40 CDN.  A few names have come up already: Bare Escentuals, Smashbox, and Too Faced.  Any advice?  Other products are welcome!!

And here’s what I think: Keep reading »

Andrea Claire celebrity hair and makeup artist

Today I’d like to introduce you to Andrea Claire, a hair and makeup artist I first met many magazine jobs ago—and whose down-to-earth manner belies her impressive CV and INSANE talent.

I can’t remember much about the story I was working on when I contacted Andrea, but I do remember that she very generously invited me over to her home in Toronto for a marathon makeup sesh! I brought my haul of products, which she went through one by one, telling me which to keep and which didn’t suit me. At the end, she did my makeup—and to this day, it remains one of my favourite looks EVER (I took pictures). All the while, she dispensed an unreal amount of advice—in fact, Andrea was the first one to teach me about lining your lower lashes with coloured liner, a look I’ve loved ever since.

Andrea has since left us for the tropics—she’s now based in Austin, Texas, and moves to Singapore next month! (Check out her pool video from yesterday and you will be très jealouse.) But you can get a near-daily dose of her wisdom at her beauty blog, Beauty & The Blog, or follow her on Twitter. I got to pick her brain about her all-time fave products and tips, so read on: Keep reading »
