Marie Robinson

Fendi spring 2011

Ever since I bit the bullet and went for all-over (coppery) colour with a smattering of tone-on-tone highlights—instead of run-of-the-mill blonde highlights on my natural mousy base—I’ve been obsessed with hair colour maintenance. As you probably know, shades with red in them are the most difficult of all to keep up, and since my colour is also blondish, I need to worry about brassiness as well. Beauty is such hard work.

Enter the über-talented celebrity colourist and Clairol colour director Marie Robinson (you’ve already seen her in these videos on colour trends and colour 101). Guys? PLEASE don’t miss this final vid in our little series here, because her advice on taking care of your colour will seriously rock your world. (It certainly did mine—I’ve had a major upgrade in my routine.) Sure, we’ve all heard that colour-treated hair needs colour-treated hair products… but there is oh so much more.

Marie Robinson is back! Like I said when I introduced the first vid in this series, she is not only colour director for Clairol (a seriously important gig) but also a seriously Big Deal in celeb-land, since she’s the go-to colourist for many (most?) of our favourite starlets, including ScarJo, Natalie Portman, Rachel McAdams and more. So you can understand why, for a beauty ed, just being in the same room with her is pretty special—let alone getting the chance to pick her brain! I died and went to beauty heaven.

Last time we heard about the trendiest shades for summer ’11 and the corresponding Clairol prodz to buy, since I like to be servicey. Today, you get 7 amazing tips on everything from finding the right shade to how often it’s safe to colour.

(PS: Please forgive a short hiatus on the editor’s picks vids. It’s not that I’m slacking on the reviewing—au contraire, I’m actually once again in the midst of testing about 15 different and highly exciting prodz for an upcoming story in FLARE. I’ll be reporting back soon on some sooper-cool innovations.)

In the meantime, for those of you who colour your hair—or are kinda sorta thinking about it—here’s the brand-new Hair Colour 101 vid: Keep reading »

You may not know who Marie Robinson is, but you DEFINITELY know her clients. Emma Stone. Liv Tyler. Anne Hathaway. Kristen Stewart. My girl Sienna Miller. They ALL get their hair colour tended to by Marie, who is widely considered the best colourist in Manhattan (and that’s no small feat).

She’s also colour director for Clairol, which is how I got lucky enough to meet her when she was in town a little while ago. Seriously, it was a career highlight—because as you may know, I’m somewhat obsessed with hair colour, both my own and others’. (In fact, the strawberry blonde was totally Marie-inspired, since you know I had to ask her for advice at the end of the interview. Yes, I am neurotic enough to always do this… but in this case, I think it paid off marvelously, if I don’t say so myself.)

But that’s not the only reason to be excited! Contrary to what you might think, it’s experts like Marie who thrill a beauty ed—not the celebrities. (Have I ever told you about my interview with Christina Aguilera? Yeah, that was awkward.) Anyway, Marie is just so darned knowledgeable. Because I scored a zillion tips and insights, I’m posting not one but several vids on all things hair colour. We’ll start today with a look at the bestest shades on both the runways and celebs… and what to buy if you want to copy them at home. Here’s the vid: Keep reading »
