Chanel pre fall 2012

Oh look! It’s Daphne Groeneveld. You know, the model with the LIPS. This pic is from Chanel’s pre-fall show the other day, which had a Bombay-meets-Paris theme. I don’t need to be the one to tell you that as per usual everything was utterly gorgeous in that special Chanel way. They even have a new nail shade! (Hint: metallics are still going strong.)

More on that in a sec, as well as a bunch of other beauty news from this week. The great Pat McGrath was in town, I got a bunch of beauty services (including one that was a tad… shall we say… “unusual”) and the blogosphere was a-buzz about a brave vlogger with acne and a guy who reads messages into hair-twirling. Oh yes, it’s been an interesting week…. Keep reading »

woman exfoliating

A few years ago, I wrote a story for ELLE Canada that was essentially anti-exfoliation. The inspiration was a chat I had with the VP of R&D for Burt’s Bees (Celeste Lutrario), who very convincingly argues that exfoliating is not all that good for you. (More on that in a sec.) Anyway, since then—and because I have sensitive skin—I’ve been careful not to aggravate it by scrubbing, toning or whirling my Clarisonic around more than once or twice a week.

That is, until a couple of months ago. You already know that I’m (still) EXTREMELY pleased with my results on the Miracle10 skincare system, which has a lactic acid-based AHA cream as part of the nightly regimen. Then I met Dr. Zein Obagi (if you’re familiar with his skincare products, yes, the man himself) who to my surprise is pretty much all about cleansing and exfoliating. And finally, I had a little chat with my facialist. Let me tell you all about these recent developments, and then I wanna know if you’re pro or against. Keep reading »

Woman with great skin

So I just returned from a quick trip to New York City—and while it’s tough for a beauty editor to whittle down her toiletries into a quart-sized plastic bag on a good day, this time was particularly heart-wrenching. Why? Because I’m testing a new skincare range right now that I am Totally.Obsessed.With. And I just didn’t have the space to lug all seven bottles (!) with me.

The fact that I’ve dedicated myself to following a regimen is a pretty big deal, because as you know, I love to dabble. Facialists are always frustrated with me whenever they ask what I use on my skin, because I can’t even tell them. It changes on a daily basis according to what’s arrived on my desk, what I discover at the back of my medicine cabinet and frankly, what I feel like giving to my skin, whether it’s a lightweight hydrating gel or a moisture-rich leave-on night mask.

The only thing that will keep my ADD brain attached to a regimen is results. And so today I’m going to tell you about not one but two lines that—no lie!—really deliver. But first, a word about whether you actually NEED to use skincare products from the same brand, or if that’s just marketing BS… Keep reading »
