Editor’s note: Curly hair peeps! I know I’ve been ignoring you. Ever heard the phrase “write about what you know?” Well, I know nothing about curly hair. My hair couldn’t hold a curl to save its life. Luckily, we’ve got new BEAUTYEDITOR.ca contributor Jasmine Kabiling to share her super awesome tips. Take it away, Jasmine!
If you have thick, frizz-prone, naturally wavy/curly hair like myself, then you know it’s what bad hair days and the most volatile love-hate relationships are made of. My hair and I love each other right now (I’ll explain how this came to be in a bit), but believe me when I say that there are days when I long for straight, silky hair so I can simply get up and go in the mornings without having to deal with the Chewbacca-Medusa lovechild that decided to make its home atop my head overnight.
I can’t say that I don’t get a little jealous when I watch tutorial vids on achieving perfect Victoria’s Secret Angel hair or those gorgeous brushed-out waves, but only because it requires having somewhat straight hair to work with. My initial thought is always: “Ugh, I have to straighten my hair first? Sew. Much. Werk.” Yeah, lazy people with curly hair problems, I know. Sigh.
But listen, you CAN be lazy low-maintenance and still have beautiful hair with minimal effort. Keep reading »
I’ve worked at a few fashion and beauty magazines, and at every single one it was common knowledge that HAIR—as in hair tips, hair tutorials, hair products, hair advice—was the most-searched subject on their websites. And for good reason, because if your hair looks like crap then there is really only so much that lipstick can do. (Unless you’re one of those annoying people who gets away with washing only once a week and can scrape your hair back into a ponytail or bun and still look incredible. In which case… I hate you. Just kidding! Sort of.)
Clearly, all of those hair searches on the Interwebs are being made by those of us whose locks need more attention. Since maintaining my own hair is a constant battle, I’ve always got my ears open for intel from ANY hair expert whose path I cross—from celebrity hairstylist (and Schwarzkopf guest artist) Tyler Colton, who I met last week, to my own personal hairdresser Bill Angst. Here are my latest findings! Keep reading »
The Fashion Week runways are showcasing a lot of different hair looks, but the soft waves at DKNY were totally my fave. The general texture, shine and smoothness of the models’ locks is what I seek to achieve daily… but I somehow fail miserably because unless it’s a special occasion, I refuse to spend more than 10 (okay, five) minutes with a blow dryer in my hand.
I’m more of an air-dry girl—which means I’m always on the lookout for a product that I can smooth onto my wet hair and go. Mousses, gels (crunchy curls, anyone?), powders and sprays: I’ve tried them all, but keep coming back to the superstar power of oil. It’s totally fab on my fine hair when I want to go au naturel, and it also rocks when I bite the bullet and commit to giving myself a blowout. I also love smoothing oils on dry hair to conceal split ends and tame frizz when I’m on the run.
But after years testing various hair oil prodz, I’ve become a very harsh critic. I expect a lot out of these babies! That’s why I’m happy to report on six that made the cut… and have my hair looking better than ever! Trust. Keep reading »
