A few years ago, I wrote a story for ELLE Canada that was essentially anti-exfoliation. The inspiration was a chat I had with the VP of R&D for Burt’s Bees (Celeste Lutrario), who very convincingly argues that exfoliating is not all that good for you. (More on that in a sec.) Anyway, since then—and because I have sensitive skin—I’ve been careful not to aggravate it by scrubbing, toning or whirling my Clarisonic around more than once or twice a week.
That is, until a couple of months ago. You already know that I’m (still) EXTREMELY pleased with my results on the Miracle10 skincare system, which has a lactic acid-based AHA cream as part of the nightly regimen. Then I met Dr. Zein Obagi (if you’re familiar with his skincare products, yes, the man himself) who to my surprise is pretty much all about cleansing and exfoliating. And finally, I had a little chat with my facialist. Let me tell you all about these recent developments, and then I wanna know if you’re pro or against. Keep reading »
I like winter in theory. Snow is pretty (and cold air does wonderful things for rosy cheeks). You get to wear cute boots, and lots of layers, and black tights are a girl’s best friend. (Just imagine the upkeep—in terms of hair removal, self-tanning and gym sessions—if it were 30°C year-round and you had to go bare-legged.)
However. Every year, at about this point in the process, I am DONE. For reasons that include: salt-stained boots, slush-stained pants and temps so freezing (try -17°C here, today) that I have to abandon even attempting to look stylish. (Out comes the North Face snowman coat and yes, the Ugg boots—sorry Ugg haters, but when it’s -17, I want to insert my feet into warm fluffy clouds.)
And oh yes, SKIN. Dry, flaky, cracking, chapped, wrinkly-looking skin.
Winter, you bitch.
But perhaps there are some skincare things that you are currently not doing, but should. So here, from one winter-hater to another, are my suggestions. Hint: it’s all about the layers… Keep reading »
Last night, a conversation with some fellow beauty editors inevitably turned to the topic of natural deodorants. (Yes, these are the subjects that come up after a couple glasses of wine.)
Have YOU tried a natural deo before? If so then you probably have a drawer somewhere where they go to die, half-used. (Worst offender: sticky, stinky Tom’s of Maine. I like their toothpastes though!) Anyway—what I mean to say is that unlike other beauty product categories, the natural deodorant aisle is generally full of ineffective, useless products. AMIRITE?
But I have good news.
First of all, every single product in today’s gallery is part of my deodorant rotation. (OF COURSE I have a deodorant wardrobe. Don’t you?)
Now I won’t pretend that these will stop ALL odour and stink. It’s just not going to happen. Because they’re not anti-perspirants, you’re still going to get dampish pits. But unless you’re sweating profusely, these should most definitely cut down on the stink, at least for several hours. (You might need to re-apply, depending on your activity levels and how warm it is.)
And I have another theory. This is in no way scientific, but inspired by something FASHION’s beauty editor, Lesa, said last night. She mentioned that she got GREAT results from a new deodorant for a week, and then it stopped working. So *I* think that because I switch mine up all the time, my body doesn’t have time to get used to one type. As I say, not scientific but something you may want to try. Who knows?
Anyway, check out this gallery of the best deos I’ve found so far. (As I make new discoveries, I’ll update.)
