Issa London - FW12 beauty

Contrary to what this headline might imply, I did not, in fact, attend London Fashion Week. (Never have.) But that’s okay, because you really do get a better view from behind your computer—and without all the stress about where to sit and what to wear.

And you know what’s kind of exciting? While London used to get a little neglected—sandwiched as it was between the more high-profile Fashion Weeks in New York, Milan and Paris—change is in the air! First of all, there’s that whole royalty/Kate Middleton/Issa dress thing. (That’s the Issa London show in the pic above—gorge, right?) And Moschino Cheap & Chic, which used to show in Milan, moved this season to London… Style.com mused that it said something about London’s current “energy.”

Now, I’m always a bit leery when people start talking about “energy,” especially when there are implied quotation marks. (Once, a guy told me I had good “energy” and I simply could NOT date him. Ew.) However, I will concede that I’m feeling the vibes when it comes to a few of London’s new beauty trends. Let’s take a look: Keep reading »

Elie Saab - Haute Couture SS12 makeup

Time for a break from all the red carpet coverage—did you know that Paris Couture Week just wrapped? It’s like the little teaser enroute to the main event (Ready to Wear, which kicks off in New York next Thursday). Except with couture, everything is entirely hand-made and there is an inverse relationship between how much it costs (upwards of $25,000 per piece) and how often you can realistically wear it (I don’t know about you, but my social life just doesn’t have a role for ginormous floral headpieces).

But… surprise! The hair and makeup was a whole other story. Usually it’s a spectacle—as over-the-top attention-grabbing as the clothes—but this time around, I’d actually wear these looks, and that’s saying something. Think pretty lashes, faux bobs, bronzey eyes and smudgy liner. Come and get inspired… Keep reading »

Miranda Kerr - Victoria's Secret 2011 Fashion Show viewing party

We already know what Adriana Lima did to prep for the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, which aired last night. (A hint, if you missed this post: it involved no solid foods for nine days before the show, and then no liquids at all during the final 12 hours.) And like I said, just knowing that makes me feel a lot better about myself, because now we know that even Victoria’s Secret supermodels do not look like Victoria’s Secret supermodels. It takes extreme measures that us civilians would never be up for (I hope).

But that’s just the body portion. Just the tip of the iceberg! Let me break this down for you. It takes one lead makeup artist (the great Tom Pecheux). Twenty-one makeup artists. Seven “body-bronzing artists” (that’s what the kids are calling ‘em these days, I guess). One lead hairstylist (you’ve heard of Orlando Pita, yes?). Twenty-one hairstylists. One lead manicurist (Mila Yagoudaief). And finally, four manicurists.

That’s to prep 38 models… but still. Just imagine what WE could look like if we had that kind of help in the mornings. If you’re wondering how, exactly, they do it, here’s the scoop… Keep reading »
