Like I touched on in my “So you want to be a beauty editor…” post, people often assume that beauty editors have the same skills as actual makeup artists. SO not true. Even though I’ve written a zillion articles about smoky eyes or liquid liner, and I definitely know more than your average girl on the street, for the most part I’m still learning and refining my makeup techniques like everybody else. (This entire site is my journey, folks.)

However. There is one area I actually do consider myself quite proficient at, and that is the art of camouflage. Probably you got the hint seeing as I’ve posted about this incessantly. (I’m not joking: I’ve talked about the most common foundation mistakes, why I love HD powders, my favourite foundations, whether you need to re-think how you’re using concealer, and how I have a concealer wardrobe.) Skin is really, REALLY important.

My handbag feels like it weighs 50 pounds. That’s because I tend to lug around about 30 different beauty products at any given time (and a good 40 percent of them are probably various lip glosses, balms, stains and lipsticks). See, it’s all in the preparation. I’m not bad now at packing for the airplane, but after chatting with my fellow beauty editor friend Kristen Vinakmens, I see the need for a handbag beauty overhaul. There are so many good prodz out there that I haven’t been using! I hit up KV (she’s worked at ELLE Canada, FLARE and Glow) for some tips on fast-fix, double-duty, 2- and 3-in-1 products. Listen and learn! Keep reading »

Woman applying concealer

Just like you need a shoe wardrobe and a jeans wardrobe and, arguably, a white T-shirt wardrobe, today I would like to establish that you need one more type of wardrobe in your life: a concealer wardrobe.

After all, I consider myself a bit of a concealer connaisseur. It’s the one product I won’t leave the house without (although blush is a close second) and the one product that I feel makes the biggest overall difference in your appearance. Unless you’re one of those genetic freaks with stupidly flawless and even-toned skin, that is. In which case, feel free to skip this post. (Although I still maintain that you should probably adopt my five-second trick for looking well-rested.)

Anyway, there are many reasons I like to exercise my concealer options each morning. Some days, you may want something organic. Others may require a long-lasting waterproof formula. You might have a flaming red pimple that needs the most heavy-duty coverage possible. Or you need to camo some dark circles and want to throw some brightening action in the mix. See what I mean? Come take a peek at all the concealers I’ve known and loved… Keep reading »
