WELL. After all the beauty WTF-ery in Milan, we’re getting a taste of it from Paris too. The biggest of the big four—Paris Fashion Week—wrapped up last week… and ooh la la, it was one of the most experimental in beauty history. I might need to lie down.
The thing is, though, that even though I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing most of these looks on the street, I’m still a fangirl for the creativity and artistry behind them. The models look weird, yes, but there’s a cool factor here. (I can’t say the same for, say, Roberto Cavalli’s rainbow eyeshadow or Fendi’s wet braided pigtails in Milan. Sorry Milan.)
So keep in mind that these are meant to shock and awe, and then take a look at five major trends that will direct what we do with our makeup (and hair) in the coming months: Keep reading »
We already know what Adriana Lima did to prep for the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, which aired last night. (A hint, if you missed this post: it involved no solid foods for nine days before the show, and then no liquids at all during the final 12 hours.) And like I said, just knowing that makes me feel a lot better about myself, because now we know that even Victoria’s Secret supermodels do not look like Victoria’s Secret supermodels. It takes extreme measures that us civilians would never be up for (I hope).
But that’s just the body portion. Just the tip of the iceberg! Let me break this down for you. It takes one lead makeup artist (the great Tom Pecheux). Twenty-one makeup artists. Seven “body-bronzing artists” (that’s what the kids are calling ‘em these days, I guess). One lead hairstylist (you’ve heard of Orlando Pita, yes?). Twenty-one hairstylists. One lead manicurist (Mila Yagoudaief). And finally, four manicurists.
That’s to prep 38 models… but still. Just imagine what WE could look like if we had that kind of help in the mornings. If you’re wondering how, exactly, they do it, here’s the scoop… Keep reading »

I have to confess—for someone who writes an awful lot about new techniques you can use with your eyeshadow, I’m one of the most unadventurous people on the planet when it comes to that particular facial region. I’ve always blamed my heavy lids, which are kind of like the Bermuda triangle of eye makeup. Below the crease, everything disappears save mascara and eyeliner. Hence my obsession with lining the waterlines, and emphasizing the lashes… on the lids, I usually just slap on my favourite Dior cream shadow (now discontinued—sob!) and call it a day.
But this really needs to change. I’ve always had a hard time with wearing eyeshadow above the crease (it was Too Much), but a few things have happened lately. As you may recall, last season we started seeing a mini-trend of eyeshadow taken all the way up to the brows. Then Emma Stone wore it and it looked amazing. Then I got my makeup done on Friday (more on that soon) and the visible eyeshadow actually wasn’t as over-the-top as I thought. And THEN I saw a whole bunch of pics from Spring Fashion Week and MAN—the things they’re doing with eyeshadow these days! So if you’re still doing the smoky eye (yawn), consider switching things up with a few of these looks. Keep reading »
