Kristen Bell Louis Vuitton party July 2010

I love me a punchy, bright lip—but am also the first to admit that in order to properly wear one, you’ve got to get a whole lot of other grooming things right. Such as: clear, even-toned skin, groomed brows, blush that coordinates (but not necessarily matchy-matchy). Really, it can be a lot. But that’s what you get when your lips scream “Look at me!” You’d best be ready for the attention.

So on days when you can’t be bothered with all of that (or maybe it’s just too darn hot outside), may I suggest a compromise? As Kristen Bell demonstrates (at a Louis Vuitton event last night), it’s lip gloss that looks bright in the tube

…but really is quite sheer and wearable on the lips. In other words, PERFECT for summer.

Here are a few standouts:

Chanel lip glosses in Laser and Pop

From Chanel’s summer collection, lip glosses in Pop (left) and Laser (right). NOTE: These are super sheer, so depending on how much you wanted to dial up the colour, you could layer them on top of a brighter lipstick (just apply and blot with a tissue before slicking on the gloss).

YSL Gloss Pur Pure Lip Gloss in No. 8 - Pure Watermelon

From YSL’s summer collection (which I raved about here), this shade is called Watermelon and is also the newest member of my Top Lip Glosses of All Time collection. It’s got quite a bit more pigment than the Chanel ones above—but honestly? So pretty for just about any skin tone.

L'Oreal Paris Infallible Plumping Lip Gloss in 306 Plumped Red

This L’Oréal Paris plumping number—the shade is Plumped Red and supposedly it lasts for six hours—is a bright, sparkly red in the tube. On your lips, it’s simply the perfect sheer red gloss.

Vasanti Lip & Cheek StainOkay, this Vasanti Cosmetics shade (the one on the right, above, called Beleza) isn’t a lip gloss but a lip stain. But I couldn’t help but include because it, too, gives you that barely-there hint of colour. Wear it alone or layer a clear gloss on top.

Now what about you—do you have any bright but sheer lip gloss faves I should know about?

Review: Vasanti Cosmetics

Canadian makeup line Vasanti Cosmetics recently became available at Shoppers and Rexall locations—you may have spotted its swank blue and red packaging or read about it over at Beautygeeks or the now-on-hiatus Sugarshock.

Why should you care? Well, I was intrigued by the brand’s initial concept of catering to women with South Asian or other yellow-based skintones (it was, after all, founded a decade ago by three Canucks of South Asian descent). But now they’ve re-launched with options for every ethnicity, so I just had to put a few products to the test.

On the subject of skin stuff, I tried the Face Base Powder Foundation—and even on my not-very-yellowish Scottish skin, the colour was flattering and natural-looking. But I have to warn you—I’m only suggesting it for oily skin types. On me it was way too drying… maybe I’ll revisit in the summer. I’d give a miss to their concealer option, the Liquid Cover-Up, which offers both too much liquid and not enough covering-up (and was also very, very yellow on me).

They have some cute colour options, especially the Tinted Lipbalm, which SugarShock also sang the praises of. The Gel Lip & Cheek Stains are also pretty, but use them on your lips only—despite their claims, they’re annoyingly not very spreadable on your cheeks, so you could end up with patchy bits.

Skip the Lipshine lip gloss (non-sticky but too goopy) and the loose Shimmer Powders (nothing against Vasanti here per se, but I just don’t get the point of them, and there wasn’t enough pigment to make them work as eye shadows).

Available at select Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall Pharma Plus locations and online at amazon.com and vasanticosmetics.com.
