When you think about anti-aging products, what comes to mind?
Probably retinol, glycolic acid or vitamin C, which have long been considered the "gold standard" for turning back time.
But there's another proven skin treatment that you may not have heard of yet—and it's actually not a topical product at all.
It's an eye mask! The iluminage Skin Rejuvenating Eye Mask. In this review, you will learn:
- What makes it better than other eye masks
- How its copper fibres can benefit your skin
- What visible results you might expect
- How to use and care for it
Keep reading to find out why I wear mine every night, and why you should, too!
The Iluminage Eye Mask
So what's the big deal about an eye mask, you ask?
Well, there are regular eye masks—which just block out light—and then there is the iluminage Eye Mask, which does that and more.
The point of difference is the fabric, which is known as a "smart textile."
It looks and feels like silk, but is in fact a super-soft polyester embedded with copper oxide fibres. That means it delivers copper right into your skin, where it administers an array of benefits.
Specifically, the patented technology is clinically proven to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles in as little as four weeks, with continuing effects over time.
Think it sounds too good to be true? Let's dive a little deeper into the science!
How Copper Can Benefit Your Skin
So here's how it works. When you put the mask on, and your skin is in contact with the fabric, it releases copper ions.
These ions are absorbed into the upper layer of your skin, where they can:
- Promote the natural growth of proteins
- Support cellular renewal processes
- Increase hydration
- Reduce fine lines and the depth of wrinkles
A great book about the many benefits of copper is GHK Copper Peptides: for Skin and Hair Beauty by Dr. Loren Pickart, PhD, the pioneering biochemist who discovered the original copper peptide.
(I think his Skin Biology line is still the best if you're interested in trying copper in a topical product, which would obviously be much stronger than this mask.)
Dermatologists have also been singing the praises of copper lately. "Copper is just as important as retinol and alpha hydroxy acids in fighting the signs of aging," Dr. Ellen Marmur told Self.
"Copper definitely plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin," Dr. Joshua Zeichner added in a Harper's Bazaar interview. "It helps to develop collagen and elastin, which maintain the strength of the skin, and it promotes the production of skin-plumping hyaluronic acid."
As for copper in a fabric, it's backed up by several double-blind studies, including:
- Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology — Reduction of facial wrinkles depth by sleeping on copper oxide-containing pillowcases: a double blind, placebo controlled, parallel, randomized clinical study
- International Journal of Cosmetic Science — Improvement of facial skin characteristics using copper oxide containing pillowcases: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel, randomized study
With four weeks of use, they found a statistically significant improvement in overall skin appearance, plus a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Here's what that looks like...
iluminage Eye Mask Before and After
This before and after shows the results from wearing the iluminage Eye Mask for four weeks, every night.
As you can see, the lines around her eyes have softened a lot! Her eyelids also look less baggy (even though she's raising her eyebrows a bit more in the after).
Here's her eye area close-up, plus one more example via Amazon:
On a younger skin, the effects wouldn't be this dramatic, of course, but it does produce a subtle improvement. Some people have said they get less puffiness, and an improvement in fine lines and dark circles.
With me, the best way I can describe it is that my eye area just looks brighter and more rested.
How to Use and Care for the iluminage Eye Mask
I figure, I'm going to wear an eye mask anyway, so it might as well be one that doubles as an anti-aging treatment!
The funny thing is, I've found the iluminage Eye Mask is better at blocking out light than any other mask I've owned, thanks to its larger size (one size fits all).
As you can see, there's an adjustable velcro strap on the back, and the fit is comfortably snug. (I think some early reviews noted that it was too loose, but they've corrected that now.) Lots of masks tend to slide around on me, but not this one—I haven't had to adjust it at all.
It's a 249 thread count, and there's some cushy padding inside, so it conforms to your face shape really well. The copper fibres themselves are completely non-irritating, so you can't feel a thing.
You might be wondering, does the copper lose its effect when you wash it?
Not for 100 washes—so it's going to last you a really long time! You should wash it by hand (I like Forever New) and lay it flat to dry.
Copper is poised to become the next big thing in anti-aging, and this right here is the easiest way to give it a try—without having to change anything about your skincare routine.
I suspect it's because it stays in such close contact with my skin all night long, and in the exact spot where signs of aging first become visible.
They should really consider making a balaclava version, don't you think?!
