The beauty looks from the American Music Awards are here, and it wasn't your typical glam red carpet event! As always, there was bit of an edge—as you'll see with Selena Gomez's new rooty blonde bob, and Hailee Steinfeld's slicked-back roots.
Above all, the theme this year was nude makeup... a trend that I couldn't be happier about!
Here are the must-see looks from the night:
What I like: Selena's hair! You wouldn't think a natural deep brunette could pull off blonde, but here it is. The dark roots (and matching brows) are the key, along with a surprisingly healthy-looking texture. I also love her lob cut! Makeup-wise, she went more bare than ever, skipping shadow and liner completely. You really notice her beautiful skin now! What I'd change: I might not have overdrawn the brows so much.
Selena is wearing: Primer // Foundation in 34 Beige Medium // Highlighter in 50 Dew You? // Concealer in 2 Wake-Up Call // Concealer in 3 Young // Powder in Beige 300 // Bronzer in Tantric 102 // Blush in 506 Flesh & Fantasy // Setting spray // Mascara in Noir // Brow pencil in Medium Brown 6 // Brow mascara in 30 Invisible // Lipstick in Slow Burn 246
What I like: Hailee's luminous skin. It's basically flawless now, with subtle, well-blended contouring and highlighting. I really like her light brown smoky eyes, framed by completely natural brows (which I'm fine with). Even the false lashes seem in balance here. She also pulls off the gelled roots that are so hard to wear. What I'd change: The J.Lo lips! It's the same makeup artist, so no wonder. I just don't get the concept of overdrawing in GLOSS.
What I like: Kat's smooth bob. (Looking at her hairline, I think it's a wig.) There's just something about this hair length that makes heavier makeup seem fresher—know what I mean? That said, this is also a lighter touch for her than usual, and her skin looks fantastic. I like the idea of matching a tawny lip colour to sheer shadow, with a strong cat eye in black. What I'd change: I could live with the false lashes if the brows weren't so drawn on. Short strokes are the way to go, not an obvious line along the bottom edge!
What I like: Ciara's wet hair, from roots right down to the tips. I have a theory that this type of 'do works better with black hair, because you get such amazing shine. Her skin is very matte, but if you look closely, you can see that it's brighter in the mid-face. I like the gold shadow and pinky-nude lipstick. What I'd change: I'm not a fan of these false lashes at all, and her brow tails have been filled in too high up.
What I like: Lili's smudgy navy liner along her lower lash lines. It looks incredible with the shimmery champagne up top, natural lashes, and black tightlining all the way around to make her eyes pop. I love the way she did her brows, and the face-framing side bang (in the back is a ponytail). What I'd change: Nothing.
Lili is wearing: Eyeshadow in Shimmering Nudes
What I like: Jenna's cute, flippy bob and glowing skin. I love how the casual hair dresses down her sparkly, plunging dress. The brick lip colour and gold eyeshadow are both more interesting than the usual nudes and browns. What I'd change: While I like this pair of false lashes, they don't appear to be placed correctly. It would be great if the foundation could be worked more into her skin instead of sitting on top, adding texture. The brows and lips both have hard edges.
Jenna is wearing: Moisturizer // Eye cream // Contour // Setting powder in Invisible // Blush in Belgard // Highlighter in Medium // Eyeshadow in Nude Brown // False lashes // Lipstick in Nude Cameo // Lip gloss in Cappuccino
What I like: Lea's sleek, centre-parted, off-the-face hairdo—even though she wears it over and over again! I'm still enjoying this pink eyeshadow trend, so I'm happy to see it here, with a matching soft pink lipstick. What I'd change: I'm not crazy about Lea with this strong a brow. (These are her ideal brows, in my opinion.) I'd also dial down the super-long false lashes and heavy contour.
What I like: Yara's cool braids—and even cooler silver eyeshadow. Rather than diffusing it out, she wore it just up to the crease, layered over soft cat-eye flicks and black waterlines. The lip colour is great, a caramel brown, and like so many other celebs these days, she left her brows alone. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Demi's flawless skin (like, it's SERIOUSLY flawless) and dramatic long black hair. I think she pulls off the matte, pale orchid lip colour beautifully, and her brown eyeshadow is nicely blended. This is very far from my personal makeup aesthetic, but I think it's executed well for this type of look. What I'd change: I'd make the brows feathery, not so angular, and blend in the ring of lip liner.
What I like: Kelly's off-the-face hairstyle, tucked behind both ears, and her beautiful complexion. Was her skin always this amazing and why didn't I notice it before?! I think the smoky eyes look great on her, as does the sheer metallic brown lipstick. Her brows have been "Instagrammed," but she has a good shape naturally. What I'd change: The stripe down her nose has to go! And the lashes are too over-the-top.
What I like: Sabrina's pink makeup palette. She's got the right skin tone to carry these cool shades, and plenty of lid space to wear the bold, glittery shadow. Her brows would be considered "messy" just a few years ago, but I'm into this trend—it's so youthful. What I'd change: If you're going to wear pastel makeup, I think the hair, outfit and jewellery have to be more sophisticated, for balance. This would be better with a monochromatic dress and sleeker hair.
Sabrina is wearing: Primer // Foundation in Porcelain // Colour corrector // Concealer in Fair // Blush in Berry Kiss // Powder // Highlighter in Rose Glow // Setting spray // Eyeshadow in Cherry Blossom // Eyeshadow in Seductive // Liquid liner in Intense Black // Mascara in Blackest Black // False lashes // Brow powder in Soft Brown // Brow mascara in Blonde // Lip liner in Rose // Lipstick in Peony Buff
Tracee Ellis Ross
What I like: Tracee's matte red lips with clean skin and defined lashes. If you look closer at her eyes, you'll see that she filled in the upper waterlines with black liner, and added a champagne shimmer on the lids. What I'd change: I love curls, and I especially love curly bangs—but I don't think this hairstyle was the right choice with the high neckline. It closes off her face.
Tracee is wearing: Face mask // Eye mask // Face mist // Face oil // Mattifier // Foundation in Banana // Concealer in 8 // Bronzer in Tahiti // Highlighter in Luster // Blush in Lively // Eyeshadow // Mascara in Black // Brow mascara in Dark // Lipstick in Carmen
What I like: Nicole's bedhead hair texture. Usually, her red carpet style is very prim and proper, so I feel like this loosens her up a bit. I also like the idea of doing rosy cheeks as the makeup statement. What I'd change: Her skin is so dry and flaky that the products aren't adhering well! Her face also looks over-injected, as per usual.
What I like: Ashlee's centre-parted hair and oversized earrings. I don't know why, but I don't even hate the heavy eye makeup and brows... maybe it's because this is such a blast from the past. She hasn't been in one of my red carpet round-ups since 2012! It's all too much, but the natural skin texture tones it down a lot. What I'd change: I'd love to see her in subtler makeup (obviously) and a darker blonde.
What I like: Pink's pink hair. I mean, it just makes sense, right? I think the cat eyes were a good choice, and the bare-ish lips keep it from looking too "done" (which is not her style). What I'd change: I really don't like the curly pompadour; I wish she'd go back to a flatter top, like this.
What I like: The best part about this look is Heidi's beachy Ombré hair—but even that I like far less than the chic lob she had back in the day. What I'd change: The purple eyeshadow, applied heavily underneath the eyes, makes no sense AT ALL. Why is her makeup always a fail? It's so perplexing for an ex-model, when all the raw materials are there. Oh well, at least she's not wearing her usual white eyeliner!
