So not only was yesterday Canada Day (happy birthday!) AND the soccer final (¡Viva España!), it was also the day of the BET Awards in Los Angeles. Founded by the Black Entertainment Television network, they were established to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports and other fields of entertainment—which means celebs like Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and of course, Queen B, hit the red carpet.
Shall we analyze?
Okay. Even though I would like to do my part in limiting the amount of Kardashian in our lives (is anyone buying this Kanye West "relationship"??), I would be amiss if I didn't point out the exquisiteness of this hairstyle. Glamour is calling it the new "it" thing on the red carpet, and have dubbed it "the brush-back"—as in the hair is worn loose but brushed back and away from the face.
Here's a frontal pic:
Lots of teasing on the top and then the sides are close to the head. Thoughts? I'm liking it.
And I like Kim's hairstyle even more when I look at Kerry Washington's. This half-up business just kinda looks like she didn't really try. However, makeup is gorgeous—great brows, softly smoky eyes and nude lips. Just think it would've made a bigger statement if her hair was let out and styled into a swingy, sleek lob.
I have serious hair envy right now. This is just so '80s-tastic, it's blowing my mind. Aren't the wild curls refreshing after so many years of those boring droopy ones (like Mariah's sporting, which we'll get to in a sec)? I love how they show off her colour too—it's sort of two-tone, with a lighter layer on top and then darker underneath.
Taraji P. Henson
After a brief hiatus, I'm sort of obsessed with side-buns again—so of course Taraji's look was one of my faves. Love how it's nice and soft and loose, and the fuchsia gloss on her lips just makes everything pop.
Oh, Nicki. I know you're going to do your thing, but platinum blonde will never be your most flattering hair colour. I do like the fuchsia lipstick and blush... everything else (hair/lashes/brows) is way too over the top. Of course, I know that's the point! Carry on then.
In case you don't know Selita, she's a model—and shouldn't a model know better than to commit such eyeshadow crimes? I mean, seriously. It's the not the green that offends me; it's the fact that it's surrounded by so much frosty white. I don't know if that's more eyeshadow or the wrong concealer shade or what, but something ain't workin' here. Otherwise, she's an insanely gorgeous woman—can you imagine how traffic-stopping she'd have looked with a neutral smoky eye, or maybe some cat-eye liner? Whoa.
So this is the OTHER Michelle Williams; the one who used to be in Destiny's Child. They disbanded in the early '00s—which is where Michelle should've left this hair and makeup too. Mostly I'm bothered by the too-long extensions. They're so Paris Hilton! Girl needs a chop badly, like to just below the collarbone for an Olivia Palermo-style lob. Right? I am also bothered by the lipstick, eyelash and eyeshadow choices—although if the hair and wardrobe were more modern, then I can imagine each one maybe working on its own. You know, like in a Jennifer Hudson sort of way.
And here's another one who needs some modernizing. I'm dying—DYING—to give Mariah bangs and go after her hair with a flat iron. Maybe chop it a few inches too. Wouldn't that look great? I just feel like there's something going on with her forehead and eyebrows that bangs would help in a huge way. She could also ditch the heavy eye makeup and goopy gloss.
What do you guys think?
Which BET Awards attendee do you think looked the best?
Who is the most stuck in the '00s (or earlier)?
Would you try Kim's "brush-back"... or Beyoncé's crazy curls?
