If you can believe it, Freida Pinto is even more gorgeous in real life than in this photo. Yep, this year's TIFF highlight for me was getting to see and meet her in person, thanks to a private cocktail reception put on by L'Oréal Paris JUST for beauty eds. (Love my job? Understatement of year.)
Still, when you get an invitation that says a famous actress will be hosting your event, you assume it's going to be the usual celeb appearance where they make a 30-second statement up on a stage, and you barely catch a glimpse of what they look like before they're whisked away by their handlers, never to be seen again.
Not this time—although I had no idea how things were going to go down. The event took place at Toronto's swanky Trump International Hotel, and once all the press were assembled, Freida made her entrance on a red carpet surrounded by photogs. (Excuse the iPhone pics, it was mayhem! I have better ones to come...)
She did her red carpet posing for them first. Here's a better look at her pink dress:
Again, if you think she looks good here, you would've been blown away by her beauty in person. She's very petite, slender, feminine and poised.
After the photo op, she came over to the area of the room set up with chairs in front of a stage... and sat right down among us. (Surely, a sign of things to come.)
Then, after introductions were made, she got up on stage to talk a bit about her relationship with L'Oréal Paris, for whom she's a spokesperson. It was really endearing—she talked about how she first came to Toronto for Slumdog Millionaire, before the film got big, so nobody knew who she was and hardly anyone showed up at the premiere. How things have changed!
She also mentioned that she once told her former makeup artist that her dream, besides becoming a famous actress, was to someday be one of the faces of L'Oréal Paris. The makeup artist told her she was crazy and that it would never happen. Who's laughing now?! (Needless to say, she no longer works with that person.)
The product news portion of the evening was a sneak peek at a new home hair colour product that'll be launching in November.
L'Oréal Paris Préférence Mousse Absolue, available November 2013 at drugstores and mass retailers
It sounds pretty cool—the first re-usable permanent home hair colour that requires NO mixing.
Also new (available now) is a collection of nail polishes and lipsticks personalized for the L'Oréal Paris spokesmodels—including Freida plus Doutzen Kroes, Jennifer Lopez and Eva Longoria.
L'Oréal Paris Collection Privée by Colour Riche Nail Colour, at drugstores and mass retailers
Here are a couple of the lipsticks (there are two more). They're all nudes; you just choose the one named for the model who best represents your colouring.

After the presentation wrapped, I thought that would be the end of our time with Freida. Nope—she actually mingled with us. Mingled. For, like, a full hour. That's unheard of in celeb-land. She also graciously posed for every single picture request. Here I am with my friend Karen from Health & Swellness:
Do our heads look gigantic next to Freida's or what? Ah, well. I also always look semi-crazed in these photos I collect of myself posing with famous people. It's because I can't believe it's really happening. (Also, note to self: Next time, brush your hair and apply powder after walking to an event and getting all sweaty. And use that trick that makeup artists are always telling you about, to put foundation on your ears. It was hot in there!)
Here's another pose that shows off her retro wavy updo (by L'Oréal Paris Canadian hair expert Eric Del Monaco).
And of course, what would a celebrity beauty post be without the makeup close-up? This job was done by L'Oréal Paris Canadian head makeup artist Eddie Malter. (More signs that Freida is down to earth: she didn't insist on her own people!)
I've got a list of the products used (all L'Oréal Paris, of course). Gotta say, I LOVE this lip colour on her—heck, anyone—and the dramatic brown smoky eyes.
The eyeshadows are:
Her eyes were lined with this pencil (new out this fall):
L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Le Khôl Eyeliner in Pure Espresso, at drugstores and mass retailers
And brows with this (also new for fall):
L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Le Sourcil Eyebrow Pencil, at drugstores and mass retailers
On her lashes, she is wearing this newbie:
(How's that for a product name? Sounds impressive.) To perfect her skin, Freida is wearing:
With this as concealer (it's like a Touche Éclat dupe):
This is the cheek shade:
And finally, what you've been waiting to find out—the lip shade!
Officially, want, officially need. I've been on a six-month fuchsia kick now and it's showing no signs of letting up anytime soon.
Oh, and I just saw this Tweet from Freida—heart!
