I don't know about you, but when I think of "long-wearing lip colour," I think of grody, drying formulas that come in bad '90s shades of brown. (My aversion to those tones goes way back...)
Stila's Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Glosses are not like that AT ALL.
The first clue is that they are glosses. I didn't even know it was possible for gloss to be long-wearing, but trust me—it is. Mind you, these are glosses in terms of the finish alone; otherwise, they have more in common with lipsticks because of the rich pigment that covers your natural lip tone entirely.
The second clue that something's different here are the colours. As soon as I saw Melon Vinyl, the watermelon pink one, I was going, "Gimme! Gimme!" in my head. The other one is Nude Vinyl, which I was understandably a bit less excited about—but this also comes in Hot Pink Vinyl (fluorescent hot pink!), Poppy Vinyl (orange red) and a few other shades (eight in total).
The ingredients, in case you care about that (Sephora's got the full list on their website):
And now here are the tubes:
Texture-wise, the product comes out quite thick but not tacky—basically your standard liquid lip colour. And I love the dessert-like scent! On the lips, they feel extremely soft and creamy. There's a little bit of stickiness, but it wasn't enough to bother me.
Now, let's take a closer look at each shade. (Don't mind the crappy hair; I was trying to mix it up while snapping multiple reviews in one day!)
Nude Vinyl is described as a "medium pink nude"; because I'm so pale, it looks more brownish pink on me than nude. (But it would probably be nude for some people!) Now, I don't know what it is—maybe the YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush in 10 Nude Insolent I reviewed here, or the Rodial Glamstick in Thrill I reviewed here—but I think I might be getting over my fear of this colour. It's kind of... dare I say it... pretty?! I think Nude Vinyl would make a great daytime office shade (if I worked in an office, that is).
Now here's an unexpected colour. Did I not say Melon Vinyl was awesome? It's a watermelon pink, so it's a pink with a hint of coral in it. And Lordy, is it bright. You wear this and some mascara, and that is all you need. I try a lot of lipsticks, and I honestly haven't seen a colour quite like this before and in this format.
So Do They Really Stay All Day?
Yes! Upon first applying, they will seem a little smeary/sticky, but the trick is to give 'em maybe an hour to really set—before you do any eating or drinking. When I say "set", that doesn't mean they dry down to a different texture; they will still feel creamy and moisturizing all day.
I wore Melon Vinyl for a good eight hours and honestly, the colour doesn't really budge. You would definitely have to work to cut through it, but I found even after eating a big dinner not very carefully, it was still there with just minor touching up needed. It comes off very easily with my makeup remover of choice from Bioderma.
I think these would be great for anyone with long-wear lip needs—including brides! How amazing would it be to see a bride in Melon Vinyl?!
