Talk about a power lunch! Variety magazine held its annual Power of Women celebration on Friday, and many of Hollywood's leading ladies—including Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lopez—turned up for the luncheon event in Beverly Hills.
Here are the celebrity close-ups from this daytime red carpet:
Oh, Reese. On the one hand I love almost everything about this—the easy side-parted hair, the illuminated skin, the copper eyeshadow, the pinky-peach blush and gloss. But then there are those dingin' false eyelashes. They're so distractingly heavy, and I can't help but wonder if the same eye-enhancing effect could've been achieved with black liquid liner instead.
It's always a bit of a surprise to see a red lip on JLo, and I like it—if it weren't for the yellow-gold shadow screaming at me from the inner corners of her eyes. Why is that there? I get that it's a nod to the current trend of emphasizing that area, but how risky to try it in this colour. If she'd stuck with a safe shade like champagne, this would've been gorgeous. Not sure about the spidery Kardashian lashes... but I still maintain, Jennifer does off-the-face hairstyles better than almost anyone else.
I barely recognized Chrissy here. Is it just me or is her face looking a little narrower than usual? Maybe it's just because her hair is up—a style I can't remember ever seeing on her before. Makeup is also much more subdued: just mascara, a little brown shadow, some subtle contouring and lip gloss. Her skin also has a wonderfully healthy sheen. I'm quite liking this departure from her usual sexay Sports Illustrated model vibe.
Haven't seen Nikki on the red carpet in forever (a couple years, to be exact), and she's made a wonderful return. Her style here is low-key but so pretty: loose Ombré waves, strong brushed-up brows and tons of lashes. Also notice how her blush is warm and peach, while her lips are a cool-toned pink. I think it's interesting to mix it up that way instead of being perfectly matchy.
Eeks Lizzy, I KNOW you can do better than this. Granted, if she were even smiling then this would be much improved. I think the main issue is the brown eyeshadow—the shape above the crease is too strong, and doesn't look blended properly. I'd love to see Lizzy with cleaner, softer lids and more definition along the lash lines. With the rumpled hair, a little graphic liner would dress up her look in a way that the eyeshadow doesn't.
Bryce Dallas Howard
Bryce has a bit of a 'crazy eyes' thing going on here—let's blame the camera flash. Otherwise, I think she looks quite cute. Hair couldn't be any shinier, and as we've seen before, she wears a red lipstick SO well. What I especially like here are the soft purple tones all over her lids, and the fact that her lashes are completely au naturel (a rare thing on red carpets these days). Also, way to go rocking the thin lips with a bright lipstick!
Uh-oh, I think we've got a case of Botox face. Even though Eva looks pretty good from afar, in the close-up her eyebrows look strangely arched and lifted. I do like the shimmery rose eyeshadow, though—and even the matching rose lip gloss. She really needs to give up the clumpy-looking false lashes.
How great does the pink blush and pink lip gloss look on Stacy's warm skin tone? Really great. I also like the sheer shimmer all over her lids, and am okay with the fringe of lashes. You may have also noticed that Stacy has gone darker with her hair (she used to be more sandy blonde). With the tone-on-tone highlights and soft waves, the result is amazing on her.
I'm fine with this. Maria could use a blotting paper or two, and really needs to re-think the bottom lip liner—but otherwise, this is actually pretty good. Her hair looks voluminous and shiny, and her eye makeup is much more natural than usual.
Wow, Lacey has such incredible eyes. It's too bad they're surrounded by a truly bizarre choice of false eyelash, and so much mauve makeup. Do we really need mauve lipstick, blush AND eyeshadow? She needs to take a cue from Nikki Reed and mix up her tones a bit. I'd also love to see her with bangs—I think they'd balance out her face nicely and draw even more attention to her unusual eye colour.
I thought Maria played it just about perfectly... until I noticed that random piece of blonde hair on the side of her updo. Why is it blonde and why is it pulled out there? Because I'm pretty sure we're supposed to have our tendrils in front of the ears and not at that location. Then I noticed the brows, which seemed to be filled in with not quite the best choice of pencil colour. But I do love her lip and blush tones—very pretty.
Lacey Chabert wasn't the only one to choose mauve makeup. So did Teri here, although she didn't quite get it right. First of all, there's the lipstick on the teeth. And just when Katrina mentioned the ol' finger trick, too! Then there's the issue of the eyeshadow. Why is it so chalky-looking? I think she could've pulled off the colourful wash of shadow if it stayed closer in tone to her skin. Also, the super-long eyelash at the outer edge looks wack.
