Summer feels like it was ages ago—except for last weekend, when Hawaii was all over my nails.
Though I wish my nails were actually IN Hawaii, attached to my body and all, it's the middle of December and I'll take what I can get. The tropical island is the inspiration for OPI's spring/summer 2015 collection, and I've been testing and swatching all 12 shades.
This range is full of summery brights that have me mean-muggin' Canada's current snow situation. With a release date of February 4th, you won't have to wait too long to snag these summery hues.
But enough talking, let's check out these nani (that's Hawaiian for beautiful) nail polishes:
Pineapples Have Peelings Too!
#RealTalk: The only thing I like about Pineapples Have Peelings Too! is its name. Otherwise, I'm not a fan of this golden yellow with random glitter in it. Why, OPI? I'd much prefer a yellow crème to this shimmery mess. But if this somehow is your jam, at least it's surprisingly easy to apply, and opaque in two coats.
My Gecko Does Tricks
My Gecko Does Tricks can go two ways: either it'll remind you of the lush foliage that (I imagine) Hawaii is blessed with, or it'll make you think of The Hulk. I'd love the former, but somehow this bright green just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's the shimmers? Nevertheless, it was a breeze to apply, and all I needed was the standard two coats. Sweet!
This Color's Making Waves
Ouuuu! This collection has a lot of shimmers (This Color's Making Waves is the third one now, out of 12). And I like this blue! If you look closely, you'll see there are teeny, tiny gold flecks, making it more special than your average shimmery blue. Great in two coats, too!
Go with the Lava Flow
Here's shimmer number four, Go with the Lava Flow. It's a nice, golden red but nothing out of this world in my books. Again, two coats for full coverage.
Do You Take Lei Away?
Oh my gosh, cuter name please? I loooove Do You Take Lei Away?, a creamy nude. It reminds me of a sweet caffè latte—so yum. This will look incredible when summer actually hits and I'm not as white as the snow covering my driveway. Plus, any nude that looks this good in two coats is a keeper.
Is Mai Tai Crooked?
I have to say, OPI really made me giggle with these names. Is Mai Tai Crooked? (hehe) is a pretty sherbet orange, and I'm smitten. Only thing is, it took three coats (yuck) and was STILL a little patchy. See the pink near my cuticle? Yeah. In OPI's defence, I guess I could have applied it a little better, but still. It's a great shade, though!
Aloha from OPI
Now THIS is a colour! The second I swiped on Aloha from OPI, I was in love. It's super-opaque (the photo is two coats, but you can get away with one really well-applied coat) and cray-cray bright. It's like a coral red on steroids, and I can't wait for it to grace my nails again. Easily a top three fave from this collection.
Suzi Shops & Island Hops
What a pretty pink this is! But I feel like Suzi Shops & Island Hops is pretty similar to a lot of other baby pinks I own, so nothing too unique about this one. Plus, it took three coats to look good since it was a little streaky with just two. Definitely nice if you have nothing like it, otherwise I'd skip it this time around.
I really love That's Hula-rious!, but again, it took three coats and that annoys me. I'd probably still buy it anyway (since I'm a sucker for these pastel mint green types of colours), but beware that it'll be a bit streaky on coats one and two. But just think of how good this creamy colour will look against sun-kissed skin. Soooo good.
Lost My Bikini In Molokini
Lost My Bikini In Molokini is such a pretty purple! Really nice application and opaque in two coats, too, so if you don't have anything like this shade, I'd say it's a winner.
Hello Hawaii Ya?
I was so excited to get Hello Hawaii Ya? on my nails because I love dusty, dusky colours. This purple-grey combo is right up my alley. It looked gorgeous on the nail, and like most of these shades, was good to go in two coats. Another top three fave!
Just Lanai-ing Around
Last but not least is Just Lanai-ing Around, my surprise favourite of the entire collection. With its muted berry tones, it's right on track with the colour of the year, marsala (which contrary to popular opinion, I am totally loving). I chose a photo with flash so you can see that pretty silver shimmer running through it. It's subtle and I can hardly even see it on my nails right now (I saved this shade for last and applied it to all ten digits after my swatching spree). But I love that the silver is there, and it adds a little something when in the light.
I was fully expecting to not like this shade, but it completely swept away the competition AND was this gorgeous in two coats. If you only get one nail polish from OPI Hawaii, it's got to be this gem.
Where To Buy
The Hawaii Collection by OPI will be available in both nail lacquer and GelColor formulas beginning February 4, 2015. Find the nail lacquers at professional salons and spas across Canada. GelColor is an in-salon, professional service only.
