36 Oscars beauty looks

Finally, they're here! The Academy Awards, a.k.a. the Oscars, a.k.a. THE PINNACLE of awards season, took place in Los Angeles last night—with all the celebrity guests busting out their beauty A-game for the red carpet.

How'd they do? Here's your hair and makeup debriefing. (For all the Oscars after-party photos, see here.)

Emma Stone

And this is why Emma is one of my beauty crushes (the original, I might add). This is fresh, pretty, yet a bit unexpected and quirky, thanks to the creamy pale orange lipstick and asymmetrical waves. I actually like that she's rocking her ultra-pale skin, with the barest sweep of peachy blush. Too bad about her eyebrow tails, but I think the makeup artist handled them as best as one can.

Emma is wearing: Serum // Primer // Foundation in 10 Beige // Blush in 190 Angelique // Eyeshadow // Eyeliner in 20 Brun // Mascara in Black // Lip liner in 90 Rouge Candy // Lipstick in HD Tulip

Dakota Johnson

Dakota wore a ponytail. To the Oscars! On anyone else, it would be way too casual, but on her, I kinda love it. (I just really dig her laidback style right now. #sorrynotsorry) Her makeup is equally low-key, with a sheer strawberry stain on the lips and soft caramel tones around the eyes—no harsh lines at all.

Dakota is wearing: Foundation // Bronzer // Eyeliner in 906 Marron Glacé // Eyeshadow in 226 Tissé Rivoli // Lip liner in 92 Capucine // Lipstick in 19 Gabrielle

Marion Cotillard

What's the French word for perfection? Because Marion nailed her beauty look here, not that I expected anything else. The twisty updo is really fun (why can't more celebs do theirs like this?), and her makeup is fresh and pretty in pink. Yes, there are false lashes, but they are very tasteful.

Marion is wearing: Tinted moisturizer in Bella Mare and Hanelei // Concealer in Maca // Tinted lip balm in Blossom Lady

Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita Nyong'o, Oscars 2015

Close-up of Lupita Nyong'o at the 2015 Oscars.

Lupita's beauty game is especially strong here, with gleaming makeup that picks up on her incredible dress—fashioned from 6,000 (!!!) white pearls. It's hard to pick up the colours from this pic, but she is wearing silvery-turquoise shadow on her lids, both upper and lower, with a strong fuchsia lip.

Lupita is wearing: Foundation in 500 // Concealer in 550 Deep Suede // Blush in 399 Petite Pomegranate // Contour and highlighter in Suede // Eyeshadow base in 06 Sienne // Eyeshadow in 602 Gris Fumee // Eyeliner in Noir // Eyeliner in Noir // Mascara // Lipstick in Sheer Chocolate // Lipstick in Aubergine Velvet

Rosamund Pike

Rosamund did her bare-faced thing again, and I'm blown away. With her hair swept back (and her pretty hairline), there's no one feature that "pops" here in the traditional sense—and I love the modernity of that. (Recall that her makeup artist, Melanie Inglessis, has talked before about not always having to show off with makeup.) With the strapless red lace dress, it's a 2015 take on Grace Kelly style.

Rosamund is wearing: Face mist Spray // Moisturizer // Powder // Bronzer // Eyeshadow in Eggshell // Eyeshadow in 95 Mirage // Eyeshadow in Milk Tea // Eyeiner in Matte Bright Brown // Lipstick in 05 Mademoiselle

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain, Oscars 2015

Close-up of Jessica Chastain at the 2015 Oscars.

Jessica always looks fab on the red carpet, but this time is perhaps a little underwhelming compared to her previous standouts. I think it's just her hair—I preferred the touch more volume and bendiness of her Independent Spirit Awards style. But I get why she went straight and simple with this cleaveagey dress. Her skin looks amazing and the subtle makeup is pretty; she even gets away with the false lashes. And those gold inner corners add a bit of somethin'-somethin', right?

Jessica is wearing: Serum // Moisturizer and Eye cream // BB Cream in Light // Eyeshadow // Eyeshadow // Mascara // Lip balm // Lip crayon in Nude Subdued

Margot Robbie

Holy stunning! Margot is back to blonde for this year's Oscars, and I'm so happy. I love the ease of her lobbed hairstyle paired with the strong, sexy makeup statement. Her darker, brushed-up full brows with the slightly overdrawn, matte orange-red lip are a little '80s (in a good way).

Margot is wearing: Primer // Foundation in Honey and Beige // Concealer in Sand // Powder in Radiant Light // Powder in Luminous Light // Brow pencil in Blonde and Soft Brunette // Eyeliner in Obsidian // Mascara // Lip liner in Raven // Lipstick in Raven

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington, Oscars 2015

Looks like Kerry toned down the brow pencil compared to the night before, which is good. But still the over-the-top false lashes, and I don't get it. She doesn't need them! The pale pink lip is gorgeous on her, and if I'm not mistaken, there's a tiny bit of pink shadow under her eyes, too. Skin is flawless and radiant just like always, and her hair looks great worn down and all sleek.

Kerry is wearing: Moisturizer // Eye cream // Primer // Foundation in Cocoa Light // Blush in Raisin Glow // Lipstick in Juicy Peach

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon, Oscars 2015

Reese looks gorgeous—very glam but also very natural. The big Hollywood waves in her hair become a little more chic with a centre part and tucked behind both ears. Makeup is all about her perfect skin, with soft browns on the eyes, natural lashes and a touch of pink on lips and cheeks.

Reese is wearing: Serum // Moisturizer // Foundation in Suntan // Contour in Intensity One // Blush in Lovely // Eyeshadow in Café Au Lait  // Eyeshadow in Truffle // Eyeshadow in Noir // Eyeshadow in Coffee Ground  // Eyeliner in 103 //Mascara in Black // Lipstick in Nude Rose // Lipstick in Peche

Sienna Miller

You know me—usually I think Sienna can do no wrong—but this time is an exception, because I really don't like this eyeshadow. It feels too strong, too unblended, too brown. I would've preferred just the sweep of black liner, or even the almost-bare face she rocked at the 2013 Oscars. I do think she looks great with her hair back, and the nudey lip colour is nice. (Side note: Are those untrimmed nose hairs? Stars! They're just like us!)

Sienna is wearing: Moisturizer // Illuminator // Foundation in 6 Medium and 7 Medium // Concealer in 2 Fair and 3 Medium // Highlighter and contour // Blush in Moon Beach and Ibiza // Powder in 1 Fair and 2 Medium // Brow pencil in Grace K and Cara D // Eyeliner in Bedroom Black // Eyeliner Shodõ Pen // Eyeshadow in The Sophisticate // Mascara // Lip liner in Pillowtalk // Lipstick in Bitch Perfect

Felicity Jones

We've seen this all before on Felicity, but it's still great. The soft makeup shows off the insane condition of her skin, with bare-ish lips, peach cheeks and subtly smoky eyes. Bangs soften the updo and keep the focus on her eyes.

Felicity is wearing: Serum // Primer // Foundation in Light Beige 020 // Eyeshadow base // Eyeshadow in Nude 506 // Eyeshadow in 881 Hypnotique // Eyeliner in Smoky Black // Lash plumper // Mascara in Catwalk Black // Lipstick in Urban 178

Keira Knightley

Keira's been at her all-time beauty best during this awards season, agreed? Even though this lighting isn't great, you can still appreciate the subtlety of the "you only better" makeup—it's all completely seamless with no detectable lines. (This is the kind of thing I would've preferred on Sienna.) I'm not sure about the cutesy headband, but her hair looks gorgeously healthy and touchable.

Keira is wearing: Serum // Foundation // Eyeshadow in 99 Hasard // Mascara in Noir // Lip liner in 34 Natural // Lipstick in 430 Marie

Jennifer Lopez

Oh nooo. I guess nobody wanted to tell JLo that reddish tones in giant circles surrounding your eyes is not a good look, because she's gone and done it again (here's the first time we saw it, if you need a refresher). As if that weren't bad enough, we have a goopy application of clashing fluoro pink lip gloss, false lashes and way too much bronzer. I don't get it.

Jennifer is wearing: Primer // Foundation in Classic Tan // Highlighter in 13 // Brow pencil in Blonde // Eyeshadow // Eyeliner in Taupe Smoke // Mascara // Lipstick in Timeless Rose

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson, Oscars 2015

Weird. Scarlett's hair colour looks brown here, when it was platinum blonde just 24 hours earlier. I think I prefer her blonde... and ginormous necklace-free. The makeup, however, I can get behind 100 percent. Similar to Keira Knightley's, it's all very blended, soft and seamless, with natural lashes and a lovely stained lip. (Tweezers needed for that one upper lip hair, though! Oh well... it happens.)

Scarlett is wearing: Eyeshadow in Nude // Eyeshadow in Evocative 95 // Blush in Peach 20 // Lipstick in Dolce Desire

Chloë Moretz

Love! Chloë's beauty look is soft and age-appropriate—and I'm especially into the eyeshadow echoing the blush tone of the lips and cheeks. (Super-pretty, right?) Hair worn loose with a smidgen of texture works well to tone down the formality of the strapless floral dress.

Chloë is wearing: Powder // Bronzer in Bronze 01 // Blush in Lovesick // Blush in Peach Whisper // Eyeshadow in Peach // Eyeshadow in Truffle // Eyeshadow in Kir Royal // Mascara in Black // Lipstick in Petal Pink

Jennifer Aniston

Nice! This is the glowy, golden-tressed Jennifer we all know and love (not her Golden Globes look). She remained true to her California-girl style with hair worn loose, softly layered and expertly highlighted around her face. Makeup is equally casual—just blush, lashes, a bit of brow definition and sheer gloss.

Jennifer is wearing: Moisturizer // Primer // Foundation in 50 Beige // Bronzer in 50 // Blush in 61 Destiny // Blush in 190 Angelique // Eyeshadow base // Powder in Fair // Eyeshadow in 238 Tissé Paris // Eyeshadow // Lipstick in 400 Louise // Lip gloss in 11 Sensuel // Lip gloss in 41 Unity

Anna Kendrick

Anna looks pretty, if a bit boring and princessy. (She has such a cool, laid-back style when she's off the red carpet—so her dressy looks are a bit of a disconnect for me.) Girl has ridonk good skin, and I love the blush here; it looks like it's coming from within. Nice soft updo, lips and brows, but the waterlining is perhaps a bit harsh.

Anna is wearing: Eyeshadow in Smolder // Eyeshadow in Glisten // Eyeliner in Black Velvet // Eyeliner in Deep Sea Pearl // Mascara in Black // Brow Pencil in Natural Beige // Lipstick in Pink Pucker

Nicole Kidman

Oh wow, this is the best Nicole has looked beauty-wise in a very long time—I'm impressed! The new, shorter, straighter and blunter haircut makes a huge difference. So do the fuller, darker brows and the sophisticated makeup in peachy tones that pick up on her hair colour. She doesn't look too frozen here; in fact, I'd say her skin looks pretty darn incredible.

Nicole is wearing: Moisturizer // Eye cream // Foundation // Blush in Craving

Zoë Saldana

Post-pregnancy, Zoë looks so curvy and glowy. Her wavy updo is so romantic, and I'm loving the natural pink lips and blush. If only the eye makeup was different. Mainly, I don't like the white in the waterlines. And I'd probably tone down the brown eyeshadow a bit.

Zoë is wearing: Moisturizer // Foundation in Classic Tan and Crème Cafe // Setting spray // Eyeshadow // Mascara in Black // Lipstick in Timeless Rose

Cate Blanchett

With skin this perfect, I don't blame Cate at all for keeping things simple. The blush has a wonderful second-skin effect, and the lip colour enhances without stealing the show. She wisely kept her lashes natural, with the teensiest smudged line underneath the lower lashes to define her eyes. Her updo looks windblown and effortless.

Cate is wearing: Foundation in 4 // Blush in 306 // Eyeshadow in 06 Boudoir // Eyeshadow in 9 Gold Copper // Lip gloss in 500

Rita Ora

I wasn't feeling Rita's new short haircut at the Grammys, but this sleek, side-parted style is much more flattering. I could do without the false lashes and the heavy blush, but overall this isn't bad—it's a cute nod to the 1960s.

Rita is wearing: Foundation // Blush in Pink Rose // Eyeliner in Black // Eyeshadow in Naughty Navy // Mascara in Black // Lipstick in Dare to Be Pink

Naomi Watts

I love that Naomi did a few subtle tweaks to her usual style here. First, the hair (I love the hair): instead of the predictable retro Hollywood curls, she did an angled wavy lob with a roughed-up texture. Then, a purplish lip replaces her usual red without looking too deep and Gothic.

Naomi is wearing: Primer // Foundation in Golden Beige // Blush in Rose Gold Lift // Eyeshadow in Nude Smokey // Eyeliner in Taupe Smoke and Black Smoke // Mascara in Black // Brow pencil in Blonde // Lipstick in Violet Parfait

Julianne Moore

So romantic and pretty! I'm glad Julianne decided to wear her hair up this time—it really shows off her beautiful skin, and she still has that flattering sweep of hair across her forehead to add drama. Makeup is a bit punchier this time, with a berry lip stain, matching blush and bolder lashes. But the false lashes aren't perfect; they seem uneven.

Julianne is wearing: Serum // Primer // Foundation // Setting spray // Blush in Soft Pink // Eyeshadow in Nude // Mascara in Black // Lipstick in Raisin Revival

Lady Gaga

Well, I suppose it's more toned-down than her usual. Lady Gaga actually looks pretty, in a Gaga way, with her pale skin, red lips and fluttery lashes. (She knows how to rock the falsies the right way.) Not loving her hair or the brows.

Lady Gaga is wearing: Foundation // Eyeshadow in Callisto // Lip liner in Jungle Red // Lip pencil in Dragon Girl

Chrissy Teigen

I am soooo obsessed with Chrissy's hair right now, and how impressively she's styling it—first there were the next-level beachy waves at the Grammys, and now she's done modern, touchable retro waves. They go great with the glossy, vampy lips and strong but soft brows. Her skin is super-luminous... perhaps a bit too luminous.

Chrissy is wearing: Moisturizer // Foundation // Concealer // Highlighter in Light Bronze // Blush // Eyeshadow in Nude Rush // Mascara // Lipstick in Divine Wine // Lip gloss in Plum Luster // Lip Gloss in Wet Violet

Jennifer Hudson

Darn, the false lashes strike again! They're wreaking havoc with what is otherwise a spot-on beauty look from Jennifer. The gold eyeshadow, subtle waterlining, natural brows and coral lips are all fantastic. And she still looks great in the short hair.

Jennifer is wearing: Serum // Moisturizer // Primer // Foundation

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly's purple unicorn hair is back (I guess it was just cleverly hidden at the Grammys). So are her usual extreme lashes and drawn-on brows. What can I say that hasn't been said before? The lip colour seems okay.

Kelly is wearing: Lipstick in Ultra Violet

Gwyneth Paltrow

Even Gwyneth is starting to dabble in false lashes, I see. What a shame! Hers seem extra-fake looking, and it's quite distracting (but then again, so are the earrings and that enormous rosette). I would've preferred no jewellery and instead of the lashes, a bright lip. A bit more brow definition also. Nice to see a natural, non-Botoxed forehead though!

America Ferrera

America did the same hairstyle as Reese Witherspoon, and it seems fine, although maybe a bit too flat on top. The makeup is okay, but would've been nice not to play it so safe... a stronger orange mouth, perhaps (instead of the earrings)? She has gorgeous full lips, so why not play them up.

Jamie Chung

Jamie is such a cutie, but I badly want to brush out her waves. It looks like she just curled and left, with no tszujing them into place. Her makeup is pretty... somehow I don't mind the lashes here, and I like how she handled her brows.

Zendaya Coleman

Another red carpet, another new hairstyle for Zendaya. This is probably the nicest and most subtle I've ever seen her makeup look. Nice highlighting around the eyes, soft contouring, glossy natural lips and gorgeous thick brows. (Not sure they need to be so pointy on the tails, though?)

Gina Rodriguez

I'm not sure about Gina's hairstyle. I love me a good side bun, and I do dig 1960s style, but I think the bouffant action here is too much. It's too big, solid and stiff-looking, like you'd touch it and it would feel crispy with hairspray. Fortunately, the makeup is good: natural lashes, flattering pinky-nude lips and peachy blush.

Solange Knowles

I always love seeing Solange's hair doing its thing. The red lips are also great on her, as are her natural brows—but the heavy eye makeup ruins it for me. If only she didn't have that harsh black pencil rimming her eyes, or the false lashes, this would've been super-stylish.

Génesis Rodriguez

I've never heard of Génesis before this, but whoa! Is she ever beautiful. She really pulls off this brownish colour palette; I also like that she paired the burgundy lipstick with just upper lashes and brown shadow. No liner—it's not always needed.

Karolína Kurková

When you've got model height and features, plus the body of a ballet dancer (how did I not notice Karolína's super-long neck before?), you can show up to the Oscars with the most minimalist of hairstyles and makeup. Life's not fair.

Giuliana Rancic

And we conclude this year's Oscars coverage with Giuliana, who is actually looking a little healthier this time compared to the Globes. (Mind you, I am still seriously concerned for her.) The darker hair colour is a huge improvement, and I like the matchy-matchy red lips—I don't think we've seen red on her before? But my goodness, the bottom false lashes are a beauty WTF if there ever was one. And lady needs to ease up on the contouring BIG TIME.

Who had your favourite (and least favourite) beauty look on this red carpet?
