While the year's biggest night in film happened back in February, yesterday was the most important event in television: the Emmys!
Here are all the hair and makeup highlights:
Does anyone do icy blonde glam better than January? I say no! She has had her share of WTF beauty moments, but definitely nailed it this time in a soft lob, stained lips and shimmery eyes. Her under-eyes are a bit dark, but on the other hand, they're not caked with concealer, either.
January is wearing: Foundation in 20 Beige // Contour in No. 30 // Blush in No. 22 // Eyeshadow in Convoitise // Eyeshadow in Safari // Eyeshadow in Mirifique // Lipstick in Raspberry Red // Lip gloss in Rose Paradis
She didn't quite master the wavy faux bob, but Kerry looks gorgeous anyway. I still wish she'd ditch her false lash habit, and put her blush higher, but the rest of the makeup is nice. I especially like the slightly shimmery reddish-pink lip colour, and that her skin isn't matte.
Kerry is wearing: Primer // Foundation in 82 Cocoa Light // Bronzer in 30 Sunkissed // Blush in 40 Bronzed // Brow pencil in Brunette // Eyeshadow in Cocoa Mauve 40 // Eyeliner in Cosmic Black // Mascara in Carbon Black // Lip pencil in 09 Rouge Noir // Lip colour in Rich Raisin
I love this. Jessica's hair couldn't be sleeker—it's centre-parted and tight to the head—to show off her pretty features. The focus is on flushed cheeks, with matching tones on her lids and lips. I appreciate that her false lashes aren't a distraction.
Another variation on the centre-parted sleek updo. Ellie wore hers with much more makeup, and I think this pretty much works for her. Perhaps a bit heavy on the shimmer shadow, but I like the tightlined eyes.
I can't believe this is Kiernan's first time on this blog! Well, Sally is all grown up now and such a beauty. She is all brows and lashes, with the smoothest, most glowy skin. Cheeks and lips are tinted a tawny rose, and that's all she needs. I love way her hair is combed into a simple side-parted style.
In a sea of generic celebs, Morena's unique look always stands out. Even though she's wearing quite a bit of makeup, I think she is very fetching in this red lipstick with flushed cheeks. The updo with the soft bang on one side is perfect.
I still think Emma's hair is too long and too blonde, and the colour is too solid and unnatural-looking. But everything else here, I mostly like. Her dark brows and smudgy eye makeup look great against her fair skin, and the side-swept hairstyle is good. I would've used a lighter hand on the peach blush.
I guess it would be too much to expect Sofia to depart from her usual heavy lipsticks. Oh, well! I don't mind the rest. Her hair is her best feature, as always, and I like her rosy cheeks and subtle eye makeup (except for the lashes). I'm also okay with her brows now!
Sofia is wearing: Foundation in Classic Tan // Blush in Plumberry Glow // Brow powder in Medium Brown // Eyeshadow in Go for the Golds (shade 3) // Eyeliner in Chestnut // Mascara in Very Black // Lipstick in Amazing Auburn
What is happening? Lady Gaga looks almost normal! I like her skin most of all (she was right; it's in excellent condition). But I also like her lip colour, blush and hairstyle. Even the false lashes kind of work because they're deliberately cray.
It's a weird day when Lady Gaga looks fresher than Sarah Hyland! Oh dear. Sarah could wear one third of this makeup and look great. Instead, there is way too much contour/blush, and between the lashes, liner and eyeshadows, it's overwhelming. Plus I find her highlights too light. Go darker and scrub off your makeup, Sarah—you will be SO chic!
Sarah is wearing: Foundation in Honey Beige // Powder // Illuminator in Amber // Eyeshadow in 866 Eclectic // Eyeshadow in 766 Exubérante // Eyeliner in 182 Backstage Purple // Lipstick in 535 Tailleur Bar
Another false lash offender, but at least Ariel still looks adorable. It's the freckles, plus her fresh skin and creamy pink lips—then just shimmery metallic shadow instead of heavy liner and shading on the eyes. I notice that she dyes her hair darker, but I'd love to see her with her natural colour. When it's so solid, these waved hairstyles tend to look a bit fake and wig-like.
Classic Christina hair! I'm sure some of this is not real, but these curly styles are always fabulous on her. Her skin seems a bit ruddy, though, or maybe it's the lighting. It's also hard to say whether the eyeshadow is working, but I do love the muted berry lips.
Christina is wearing: Foundation // Powder // Highlighter (lightest shade) // Blush in Flirt it Up // Eyeshadow in 81 Sunday Brunch // Eyeshadow in 3 Girls Night Out // Eyeliner in All Black Everything // Mascara in Ultra Black // Brow pencil in Honey Blonde // Lip stain in Always Red // Lip stain in Blackberry Sorbet
Holy gorgeousness! Rebecca is the epitome of fresh, modern glamour in this perfect red lip with brushed-up natural brows. There is no heavy liner or shadow, just defined lashes, and a seamless flush on the cheeks. Her hair tucked behind both ears and softly waved is the ultimate complement to the makeup. Sooo perfect!
Oh wow, this is Amanda's best look in ages. I'm dying over the top knot! So, so cute with the bright red lipstick and extra-bold brows. Also, thank you Amanda for not choosing to wear false lashes!
Well, Padma looks a bit like she just came from the cosmetic doctor's office, but there's still a lot to like with her styling. The red lipstick and blush are amazing against her warm skin, and her loose hairstyle is really quite sexy. Not feeling the lashes, as usual!
Nice work, Gina! In the past, she has gone too wild with her lashes (see here, for example). This time, they are way more restrained, and overall she just looks really pretty and fresh. I love the clean ponytail and glossy pale lips.
Jaimie tried out wet-look hair, and I think she succeeded! Nice to see her mixing it up instead of her usual choppy bob. She lost a bit of the coolness factor by adding the lashes, but the tightlining is good, and so is the rest of her makeup. I think her brow area has been Botoxed, by the way one brow is arching (Spocking!). I'd love to see her grow those in a bit more, too.
I think Natasha had the most fun on this red carpet. I love her smile, and her pink lipstick. Also her hair! Obviously because of the colour, but also the style—she has great volume and texture, but control near the roots. It's a major shame she added the false lashes, because they do not belong here.
Darn! The red hair didn't last, and now Elisabeth is back to (a somewhat fried-looking) blonde. I'm not in love with the raspberry lipstick and jet-black false lashes... with the hair, these colours just feel too strong.
I've had my eye on Maisie for a bit, because I love her unique look—a beautiful round face shape and big bold brows. Nothing out of the ordinary here as far as styling, just side-swept waves, tons of lashes and a matte nude lip.
Maisie is wearing: Bronzer and highlighter // Blush in Rose Glow // Eyeshadow in 166 Victoire // Eyeshadow in Velvet // Mascara in Black // Individual false lashes // Lip balm // Lip crayon in No. 1 Nude
We can always count on Naomi to keep it classy. Understated makeup as usual, with a simple, textured updo. Her roots don't really bother me.
I'm glad Maggie's short hair has grown out into a bob again, which is far more flattering for her. Curls are a bit piecey, but I won't complain. I also like that she kept her makeup really low-key—she is glowing, but still looks like herself.
Amy is still rocking her reddish hair, and is looking better than ever. I love the texture and frayed ends here—that definitely gives her a younger, cooler vibe. Makeup's not bad, but I see my pet peeves of false lashes and visible lip liner again.
Claire doesn't seem to get it quite right on the red carpet, does she? The faux bob hairstyle is the best part. I kinda wish she'd cut it to this length for real! But then the lashes ruin everything... this is a truly terrible set of false lashes.
This is kind of cool. Sarah's look won't give you the warm and fuzzies, but it's a commendable effort. I really like her red lips and lashes, and how her brows are played up, but without obvious filling. The sleek hair is good, too, just not sure about how it flicks out at the ends.
Julie looks good. Besides the lash faux pas, I'm on board with pretty much everything else: the textured hair, soft lip colour and gorgeous skin. Maybe she could try not lining so heavily under her eyes to open them up.
Julie is wearing: Foundation in Soft Beige and Medium Beige // Concealer in Buff 09 // Blush in Sunkissed 30 and Pure 22 // Eyeshadow in Smoky Steel 30 // Eyeshadow in Mink Brown 50 // Eyeliner in Cosmic Black // Mascara in Carbon Black // Lip colour in Berry Bright and Warm Caramel
It takes some guts to wear a hairstyle like this, so Anna did well! I actually really like it on her—it feels soft and sort of ethereal. Skin and lip textures are both great, but I don't know why the inner thirds of her brows are so dark.
I really, really, really want to give Julianne a makeunder. No surprise here that she's done too much—from the chunky black lashes to the heavy eyeshadow to the too-low blush. She already has such striking colouring, all of this just covers up her beauty. And I dunno... that triple-hairband thing is kinda dated, right?
Why are they styling Uzo like she's going to senior prom? Honestly, it's such a disconnect for this woman. I want to see her with sleek hair and a stronger beauty statement.
In case you were wondering, yes, Heidi is still doing that thing with the white eyeliner along the inner rims of her lower lash lines. I think we need to take all pencils away from her, because there's also a problem in the lip area. I swear, if she ditched those habits and stopped getting spray tans—maybe even tried a bold creamy raspberry lipstick!—she would blow our minds. The raw materials are all there.
Again way too heavy. But there's something interesting about the cool-toned marsala lip with Sophie's warm red hair colour. I think if she wore it without the blush and heavy eyes, the combo would be more of a style statement.
Time for one of our semi-annual Giuliana sightings, and she's not actually the last on this list! Way to go, Giuls. Compared to many red carpets of seasons past, this isn't bad. Sure, the contouring is heavy, but at least she's not caked in mismatched foundation and bottom false lashes!
Taraji P. Henson
Taraji, why?? She did so well at the Critics' Choice TV Awards! Unfortunately, she piled on a ton more eyeshadow here, and exaggerated her brows so much that it's reminding me of this doll. At least her hairstyle is on point.
I had really hoped that Taryn's two-toned hairstyle was just going to be a short-lived experiment. Nope, it still exists—which is perplexing! So is the way she styled it, all slicked-back. Even if the blonde ends were tied up in a low bun, it would be an improvement.
We conclude this year's Emmys coverage with Laura and her eyebrows, which is becoming a bit of a Beautyeditor tradition! (This time with sweaty/makeuppy skin and gobs of eyeliner.) Did you know that Laura tweezes all her friends' eyebrows? It's true. That's what she told Us Weekly in 2012. I swear, if I saw her come at me with tweezers, I would run so fast. Girl is aggressive. Is it just me or is the shape getting more extreme?
Who had your favourite (and least favourite) beauty looks on this red carpet?
