With some Before & Afters, you can clearly see the work the celeb had done, and it's strangely reassuring. Like Dakota Johnson, Kendall Jenner, or Bella Thorne, for example. Yes, they were already born with many genetic advantages—but a little surgical tweaking was what transformed them from "cute girl next door" to "Hollywood gorgeous."
With Gigi Hadid, however, I don't think that's the case.
I really think Gigi was just born flawless.
Do you agree? Come and take a closer look:
Gigi in 2012
Our first shot is from Gigi's early modelling days, when she was just 16 years old. Good grief, did you know any teenagers who looked like this back in high school? Not much has changed since, except her eyebrows were thinner then. As for her nose—that's usually the one feature that gets whittled down, but we shall see...
Later in 2012, Gigi made her first red carpet appearance. She was blonder here, and wasn't brushing out her curling iron waves at this point—but even those styling choices can't take away from her natural gorgeousness. I think her face also had more baby fat here.
By the fall of 2012, Gigi's eyebrows were growing out nicely, and I just love this beachy, textured hair. (Gisele who?) She still has a bit of a baby face here, at age 17.
Gigi in 2013
Now we're in 2013, and I'll admit, this photo did give me pause regarding her nose. Was it wider back then, or is it just the low angle of the camera?
Gigi was 18 by this point, and I think this is one of the prettiest hairstyles she's ever worn. With fresh-faced makeup, the long waves and Boho twists give her a much softer look than we're used to seeing today.
Gigi in 2014
Still 18 years old in this photo, Gigi wore her hair in an updo that shows off her perfect, plump features. I'm not crazy about the liner underneath her bottom lip, but everything else is faultless.
Here, Gigi's 19, and it's funny how she looks more like a typical teenager in this casual shot. Her hair looks way blonder again, and her cheeks fuller.
This was the photo I saw when I first heard about Gigi (she'd just landed her gig with Maybelline). Maybe it's the clever strobing and artfully tousled hair, but she suddenly looks more grown-up. Is her nose more button-like than before?
Gigi in 2015
Now we're in 2015, the year that Gigi completely blew up. In this shot, she was 20, and it's an unexpected bright lip moment—she usually sticks to nudes. She's also wearing false lashes, and her skin is very luminized.
This is one of my favourite Gigi looks: simple hair, glowy skin, matte nude lips and dark lashes. Her transformation into a world-class supermodel is pretty much complete.
From this point forward, Gigi started experimenting with bolder beauty statements. Here, it's a faux bob (actually a half-wig) with her usual luminous nude makeup. Notice how far her brows have come since 2012!
Gigi in 2016
In 2016, Gigi turned 21, with her modelling career showing no signs of slowing down. In this photo, her hair colour is a slightly darker blonde. If you look closely, you can see the contouring of her nose—does that account for what appears to be a slimmer shape?
For this event, Gigi donned clip-in bangs (although she JUST got them for real now, at Paris Fashion Week). Her makeup is heavier, too, featuring smudgy dark liner and overdrawn lips. Did you spot what's happening with her nose? The contouring is at the top, in between her eyes.
Here, Gigi got experimental with red lipstick and a bouffant updo. Side by side with her first modelling shot from 2012, the nose looks pretty much the same. Her brows are just thicker, and her upper lip has been re-shaped with lip liner.
Update: Gigi in 2017
In 2017, Gigi darkened her hair a few levels to this glossy mid-brown. Amazing how it makes her eyes pop!
Bella Hadid might've tweaked her face with a nose job and lip fillers, but I, for one, believe Gigi is au naturel.
Sure, a few things have changed compared to four years ago. She's not a teenager anymore, so she lost some baby fat from her face. She also grew out her tweezed eyebrows, stopped lightening her hair and started wearing a lot more makeup. The latter counts for a lot—just highlighting and contouring in a strategic way can transform the shape of a feature (for example, creating a slimmer-looking nose). And Gigi has also adopted the current trend of overlining her lips, which gives them a more balanced, fuller appearance. I'll take that any day before lip injections!
So this appears to be one of the rare Before & Afters where I conclude that nope, the subject has not, in fact, had any work done. (At least I don't think so!) Do you agree?
