Everyone wants big lips these days—but if you're anything like me, you're not willing to go the injection route to get them!
Call me crazy, but in the time I've been writing my Before & After column, I've seen way too many lip filler jobs gone wrong. (See Ellie Goulding and Khloé Kardashian, for starters.) So often, artificial enhancement in that area ends up looking lumpy, unnatural and distracting. It can even affect your facial expressions and ability to smile.
But at the same time, it's hard to deny that full lips add a certain je ne sais quoi to a face. Biologically-speaking, they are said to be a sign of fertility. And as anyone who has experimented with overlining knows, they can balance out your features and give you more room to play with colour.
So wouldn't it be great if there was a way to get a bit more lip volume, sans injections, without looking "done?"
There is! I've been test-driving a new lip plumping tool, and in this review, I'll cover:
- What's included
- How it works to plump up the lips
- How to use it, step by step
- My before and after results!
Read on to find out more about the PMD Kiss Lip Plumping System...
What Is the PMD Kiss Lip Plumping System?
That's why I had high hopes when they sent me the Kiss Lip Plumping System to try. Frankly, I was eyeing it up even before that to purchase myself!
The box includes:
- A hand-held lip plumping device
- Two interchangeable plumping tips (one small, one large)
- A USB charging cord
- A lip plumping serum
And here's what they claim it will do:
- Increase the look of fullness and volume
- Reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles
- Restore and revitalize natural lip colour
- Create instant and long-lasting results with daily use
Sounds amazing, right? Keep in mind that they're saying "the look of" fullness, not that it actually does increase your lip size permanently. (Which is probably a good thing.)
Here's how it does that...
How the PMD Kiss Lip Plumping System Works
Remember the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge? Before she admitted to getting injections, fans across the globe tried to recreate her look by sucking on shot glasses, often with disastrous results like cuts and severe bruising.
PMD Kiss is based on the same mechanism—suction—but without any of those dangers!
The tip of the device features a tiny pink suction cup that you place on your lips. When you power it up, it gently pulsates and sucks, like a vacuum, which subtly swells the lip tissue and deepens its colour.
Over time, they say it will boost collagen, I suppose from increased blood flow to the area, and the results will be longer-lasting. In the company's tests, 91 percent of users saw increased lip volume after using the device for eight weeks.
How to Use the PMD Kiss Lip Plumping System
Step 1: First, make sure you've charged the device for two hours. Then, you're ready to begin with clean, dry lips. In this "before" photo, you can see my natural, un-enhanced lip size and non-existent upper lip!
Step 2: Apply the lip plumping serum. Wait 60 seconds to allow it to absorb.
The serum has a nice, non-greasy texture, and it doesn't tingle as much as most lip plumpers I've tried. But it still really chapped my lips! I don't think it's a must-use with the system, so I'll be skipping it with future uses.
Step 3: Press the power button and firmly place the suction tip on your lip, creating a tight seal so the vacuum technology can work. The device will start pulsing.
You're going to work your way across your lips in six sections: upper left, right and middle; and lower left, right and middle. You want to aim for 10 to 20 pulses per section. This should take around five minutes.
For more fullness, you can change the speed. There are two settings: Standard is for "a quick plump," and Low is for a "more intense, targeted plump."
You can also use it on the inner tissue of your lips. I tried that for my upper lip, where I need more fullness.
None of this is painful or irritating, by the way! It just feels like a gentle suction. For that reason, I don't think it's a big deal to do more pulses if you want to. I think I did around 30 to 40 per section.
Step 4: Voilà, fuller lips that don't look fake!
To really see the difference it made, you need to look at my before and after shots side by side...
My Before and After
It wasn't until I compared these pics that I appreciated just how well the PMD Kiss device worked for me!
No, it's not a dramatic change like they show on their Before and After page (and I have no idea how they got those results unless they were pulsing for a REALLY long time!). But still, I'm really happy with this result. It's very "your lips, only better."
As you can see, I definitely got the most volume on my lower lip. My upper lip was more of a challenge, but there is a slight improvement. I'd like to work on that area some more to see if I can get it more plump over time.
I also love how this device gave my lips a nice, rosy glow that replaced the need for lipstick.
These results lasted about one and a half to two hours. I'm guessing that the more you use it, the longer the fullness will stick around.
There's just one thing I wonder about, and that's whether the suction action could possibly increase the chance of developing fine lines around the mouth. After all, we're often warned by dermatologists not to tug at the skin around our eyes, or even drink out of a straw!
For that reason, I don't think this is a beauty gadget I'd necessarily use every day... but I think it's an incredible tool to have in your arsenal for special occasions, nights out or photo sessions where you want that little extra beauty help.
If you're someone who wants to experience the fuller lip look without needles, I think you'll love this as much as I do!
