Here on Beautyeditor, it's an annual tradition to revisit the prettiest hair and makeup looks, most important trends and exciting red carpet moments that defined the last 12 months.
So before we say goodbye to 2017, let's take a walk down memory lane and gaze back at this year's best in beauty, from colourful eyeshadow to wet hair:
Emily Ratajkowski at the Golden Globes
The first red carpet event of the year, the Golden Globes, kicked off with Emily Ratajkowski wearing an unconventional shade—warm orange—all the way around her eyes. Bright colours, 360-degree applications and warm tones all became noteworthy makeup trends in 2017. No wonder Urban Decay later launched its Naked Heat Palette!
Emily is wearing: Foundation in 70 Beige • Highlighter in Light Medium • Powder in 30 Naturel • Blush in Élégance • Bronzer • Highlighter • Eyeliner in Mat Taupe • Eyeshadow in Convoitise • Eyeshadow in Codes Élégants • Eyeshadow in Codes Subtils • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Brun Cendré • Lip liner in Natural • Lipstick in Sari Doré
Janelle Monáe at the Golden Globes
Hair-wise, Janelle Monáe gets ALL the creativity points this year. She reinvented the beehive for the Golden Globes by dotting it with pearls and keeping a soft, fluffy texture. Also note the silver highlights under each iris.
Janelle is wearing: Concealer in Deep • Eyeshadow in Nudes • Eyeliner in Espresso • Mascara in Intense Black • Brow powder in Rich Brown • Brow mascara in Rich Brown • Tinted lip balm in Taffy • Lipstick in Delicious
Mandy Moore at the Golden Globes
It was a big year for Mandy Moore, and it was this Golden Globes moment where she really made her comeback. Rather than the typical Hollywood glam, she bucked convention with '70s-inspired hair and two-toned eyeshadow.
Michelle Williams at the Golden Globes
Michelle Williams' Golden Globes look was memorable not so much because of her hair and makeup—but thanks to the simple black velvet ribbon tied around her neck! The choker trend may be played out now, but everyone was talking about it at the time. It's a genius way to complement her Mod platinum crop and barely-there makeup.
Hailey Baldwin at the Golden Globes After-Party
Hailey Baldwin's profile skyrocketed this year, but I didn't actually notice her best look until I did her before and after a few months later. I love this because it represents so much of what 2017 was about. There's the all-important bob, the wet-look hair, and the monochromatic brown makeup tones. Plus, my beauty prayers have been answered because celebs like Hailey have started to ditch false lashes!
Ruby Rose at the People's Choice Awards
A statement lip has the power to transform your entire look, as Ruby Rose demonstrated at the People's Choice Awards. This was important not just because of the colour, a blackened berry that edges up the orange suit (along with bold brows and a disheveled pixie). It was ALSO a big deal because this was how Urban Decay chose to introduce their new lipstick shade—it arrived in stores the day after!
Kerry Washington at the SAG Awards
Sometimes it takes a little while for runway trends to trickle down to the red carpet, and Kerry Washington's SAG Awards eyes are a great example. She took the graphic shape in dramatic matte black and made it wearable with inner corner highlights, peach lips and cheeks, and loose hair.
Kerry is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation in Cocoa • Concealer in Deep • Blush in Vibrant • Eyeshadow in Smoky Steel • Eyeliner in Cosmic Black • Mascara in Carbon Black • False lashes in #811 • Brow pomade in Dark Brown • Lip balm • Lip crayon in Berry Brown
Sophia Bush at the SAG Awards
Sophia Bush doesn't normally come to mind when I think about creative makeup, but she surprised us all at the SAG Awards. Who could have imagined that neon pink and purple could look so good?! They're set off beautifully by the fresh skin and casual low ponytail.
Sophia is wearing: Foundation • Blush in Vibration • Lipstick in La Sensuelle (as eyeshadow) • Eyeshadow in Tissé Cambon • Eyeliner in Cassis • Mascara • Lip crayon in No. 1 Nude • Lip crayon in No. 3 Rose Clair
Yara Shahidi at the SAG Awards
Not every beauty look has to be "different," mind you. Yara Shahidi—another star on the rise in 2017—proved that simplicity can be equally gorgeous. At the SAG Awards, her tight updo and subtle makeup showed off her flawless (16-year-old!) skin. I could stare at her face for days.
Lea Michele at the Grammys
This was the year that Millennial Pink descended onto our eyelids, and Lea Michele had one of my favourite interpretations at the Grammys—perhaps because this was such a departure from her usual heavier style. She wore a berry-toned pink eyeshadow, sans mascara, all the way around her eyes. With her hair tucked behind her ears, the effect is so fresh!
Emma Stone at the Oscars
There will always be a place for good, old-fashioned Hollywood glam, and nobody did it better this year than Emma Stone at the Oscars. Little details make it feel new—like the shorter length for the vintagey waves, and the generous dusting of sparkly gold eyeshadow. Even the lipstick has brownish undertones instead of a more predictable blue-red.
Isabelle Huppert at the Oscars
Also at the Oscars, French actress Isabelle Huppert proved that great style has nothing to do with age (she's 64). A lighter touch is best on mature skin, so these lips, brows and lashes were perfect. Her mid-length red waves and ear cuff kept it youthful... with an edge!
Isabelle is wearing: Lip crayon in Endangered Red
Emma Roberts at the Oscars After-Parties
Clearly, all the redheads stole the show at the Oscars, because I've got one more to show you, from the Oscars after-parties. Emma Roberts defied the conventional "beauty rules" by wearing a new fiery red hair colour WITH a red lipstick. If this is wrong, I don't want to be right!
Emma is wearing: Face mask • Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation • Concealer • Powder • Contour and highlighter • Brow pencil • Brow gel • Eyeshadow in Bette • Eyeshadow in Jean • Eyeshadow in Bronzed Garnet • Mascara in Glossy Black • Lip liner in Kiss 'N' Tell • Lipstick in Red Carpet Red
Vanessa Hudgens at the Oscars After-Parties
The cat eye never goes out of style, and the one who wore it best in 2017 was Vanessa Hudgens. At the Oscars after-parties, she paired her dramatic wings with feathered brows and a neat, centre-parted updo.
Kristen Stewart at the 'Personal Shopper' Screening
I won't lie, I was disappointed when Kristen Stewart shaved her head and bleached it blonde—because the look she had just before that was so good! The long-short cut, chunky black glasses and red lip stain that she sported at the 'Personal Shopper' Q&A suited her incredibly well. She always makes a statement with her makeup, but this was my favourite on her this year (minus the mismatched brow pencil).
Cara Delevingne at the Unite4:Humanity Gala
Just like Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne also made headlines this year for shaving her head. But I thought the silver bob she had beforehand, at the Unite4:Humanity Gala, was way more inspiring. Grey hair tones—that is, deliberate greys—were one of 2017's main hair colour trends. And burgundy shadow continued to enjoy popularity, popping up in palettes at all price points.
Gigi Hadid at the Met Gala
We didn't see as much of Gigi Hadid on the red carpet in 2017—maybe because she was busy working on her makeup collection—but her Met Gala appearance was definitely memorable. For one, she dyed her hair brunette, and faux-bleached her brows with concealer to draw more attention to her eyes. If you look closely, you'll see that her cat eye has negative space, which is an emerging technique that started a few years ago in nail art. Lastly, the matte lip in medium pink was VERY 2017... although I think it's now on the wane!
Gigi is wearing: Primer • Foundation • Powder • Highlighter • Setting spray • Concealer (on brows) • Brow mascara in Blonde • Eyeshadow in The Rock Nudes • Eyeliner in Sleek Onyx • Eyeliner in Blackest Black • Mascara in Very Black • Lipstick in Loyalist
Kendall Jenner at the Met Gala
Wet-look hair isn't exactly new, but in 2017, more celebs stepped out with it than ever before on the red carpet. I think Kendall Jenner wore it best at the Met Gala, with gorgeous tan skin and a creamy orangey lipstick. This may have been her most beautiful look of all time.
Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala
When even Kim Kardashian herself moves on from her signature hair and makeup, you know the culture's beauty aesthetic is changing! Signifying a new "less is more" direction, her Met Gala look featured shorter, blunt-cut hair and a surprisingly contour-free face.
Kim is wearing: Moisturizer • Face oil • Eye cream • Foundation in 50 Beige • Eyeshadow in Undertone • Eyeshadow in Sable • Eyeshadow in Visone • Eyeliner in Noir • Mascara in Noir • Lip balm in Clear • Lipstick in Libre
Kylie Jenner at the Met Gala
Instagram brows reached their peak with Kylie Jenner's Met Gala appearance, but that's not why this look was memorable. It's because she actually looks... sweet!? It's the pink makeup, of course, and the bobbed blonde wig, which give her a softer vibe than, say, what she wore here. I should also note that lip injections went mainstream in 2017, no doubt because she was an early adopter.
Lily Collins at the Met Gala
Here's another bobbed wig, but with a completely different sensibility. Lily Collins, among other celebs, channelled Rei Kawakubo for the Met Gala. It's so striking with vampy lipstick, chunky lashes and her full, dramatic brows.
Rihanna at the Met Gala
I think we can all agree, though, that Rihanna would win the Met Gala—if not all of 2017!—if we were handing out awards. Her blush-turning-into-eyeshadow is a '70s technique that's known as "draping." But rather than a muddy colour (which would be typical of that era), our girl did it in vibrant fuchsia topped with highlighter AND paired with a berry lip. We collectively died and went to beauty heaven.
Taylor Hill at the Met Gala
Remember when "matchy-matchy" used to be a bad thing? That all changed in 2017, as countless stars coordinated their eyeshadow and lipstick with their outfits. My favourite example was Taylor Hill at the Met Gala. Her dress was the exact same shade as her intense burgundy eyeshadow, with the colour echoed more subtly on the lips. Another thing to note are the brows—so many models let theirs grow in this year.
Zendaya at the Met Gala
Who could forget Zendaya's giant cloud of hair at the Met Gala? I'm not sure if it was a wig, but there's definitely a natural hair movement afoot. Makeup-wise, she let go of her usual heavy lashes and obvious contouring, opting for strong brows and a matte orange lip instead. Overall, her look become a lot more editorial this year.
Bella Hadid at the Cannes Film Festival
Whatever you may think about Bella Hadid's beauty transformation, this Cannes look was downright mesmerizing. I said it before and I'll say it again: she was BORN to wear this style of eyeliner! It's all about the "Vs" at the inner corners, which give a feline effect. Two other things to note: her lips match her dress, and her brows are soft. That heavy, filled-in, angular brow from a few seasons ago is definitely over.
Bella is wearing: Eyeliner in Catwalk Black
Lily-Rose Depp at the Cannes Film Festival
The other star who stood out at Cannes was Lily-Rose Depp, who became a major star this year (and a face of Chanel). Unlike most celebs, who endure years of hair and makeup missteps before graduating to a beauty A-team, she's already working with the best. Like makeup artist Kate Lee, who did this stunning modern smoky eye in warm brown and black. I'm not crazy about the overdrawn lips, but as you know, they were a common theme in 2017.
Priyanka Chopra at the CFDA Awards
Priyanka Chopra walked a lot of red carpets this year, and got a lot more experimental with her hair and makeup, which I commend. But of all the looks, it was this classic CFDA Awards one that I loved the most. Her skin is absolutely glowing, and the red lip looks great with the chic updo and gold eyeshadow.
Priyanka is wearing: Face mist • Foundation in Shea and Sand • Concealer in 8 • Concealer in 4C (as highlighter • Powder in Bronze • Lipstick in Gaia (on cheeks) • Highlighter in Sunlight • Eyeshadow in Gardens of Marrakech • Illuminator in Brilliance (as eyeshadow) • Mascara in Black • Lip balm • Lipstick in Dahlia • Lipstick in Carmen
Kat Graham at the BET Awards
It may be a wig, but Kat Graham had one of my favourite bobs of the year at the BET Awards. This was THE haircut of 2017, in case you hadn't noticed. The amazing thing about this length is that it makes even heavier makeup (like the Instagram brows) look more fresh.
Rita Ora at the Teen Choice Awards
Every once in a while, you've got to shake up your usual look, and Rita Ora did just that at the Teen Choice Awards. You wouldn't think neon yellow hair and hot pink lipstick would look good together, but they do! This was a fun departure from her go-to blonde hair and red lipstick.
Paris Jackson at the VMAs
Paris Jackson became a red carpet regular in 2017, and at the VMAs, she showcased the new way to wear your eyeliner: along the lower lash lines. The teal shade (actually an eyehshadow) doesn't match anything in particular, but it works! Notice how it's all softly diffused out, with no harsh lines.
Jane Fonda at the Emmys
Now THIS was a beauty moment. The Internet freaked out when Jane Fonda—who just turned 80!—wore this long (faux) ponytail and bangs to the Emmys. Past a certain age, so many women play it safe, cut their hair off, and keep it boring. She's styled to get noticed, and I love that!
Zoë Kravitz at the Emmys
Every year, there's one star who gets a dramatic pixie cut, and in 2017, it was Zoë Kravitz. While she flirted with blonde a few months earlier, I loved the brunette she had at the Emmys. She doesn't need bright makeup because this already showcases her amazing skin, brows and bone structure!
Zoë is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Foundation in B40 Sand • Concealer in 3 Almond • Powder in 02 • Bronzer in 03 Jasper • Blush in 07 Rebelle • Highlighter • Brow pencil in 002 Dark Brown • Eyeliner in 7 Charcoal Grey • Eyeshadow (black shade) • Mascara in 1 Charcoal Black • Lipstick in 59 Melon d'Or • Powder (to set and mattify the lipstick)
Margot Robbie at the 'Goodbye Christopher Robin' Premiere
Please take a minute to appreciate the artistry behind Margot Robbie's 'Goodbye Christopher Robin' premiere look, if you haven't already. Because pairing yellow eyeshadow and wet hair with baby pink lips and a feminine dress was GENIUS, I tell you. I live for unexpected red carpet moments like this one!
Ana de Armas at the H&M x Erdem Show
Be prepared to see a lot more of Ana de Armas in 2018. She was my "one to watch" this year, and so far, hasn't made a wrong beauty move. This H&M x Erdem show look is a great example of why I'm crushing on her style: fresh skin, imperfect hair and modern brownish-red lips.
Jennifer Lawrence at ELLE's Women in Hollywood Awards
My immediate reaction when I saw Jennifer Lawrence at ELLE's Women in Hollywood Awards was "WOW!" So I'm pretty sure this qualifies as an important 2017 beauty look. Before this event, we really hadn't seen her hair this long or straight in years. Similar to Kerry Washington, this is an example of the new graphic eyeshadow shape in matte black, but with even more diffused edges.
Hailee Steinfeld at the AMAs
Just a couple years ago, Hailee Steinfeld's eyebrows would've been considered "messy" by most people, including me. But all of a sudden, in 2017, a natural brow just looked RIGHT. At the AMAs, her brows seemed completely un-touched. I, for one, am into it!
Selena Gomez at the AMAs
She's already gone back to brunette, but Selena Gomez surprised us all by giving blonde hair a test-drive at the AMAs. This is instructive for any dark brunettes wishing to go lighter. The trick is to keep your roots and brows their natural hue; the lob length helps keep it current, too.
Selena is wearing: Primer • Foundation in 34 Beige Medium • Highlighter in 50 Dew You • Concealer in 2 Wake-Up Call • Concealer in 3 Young • Powder in Beige 300 • Bronzer in Tantric 102 • Blush in 506 Flesh & Fantasy • Setting spray • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Medium Brown 6 • Brow mascara in 30 Invisible • Lipstick in Slow Burn 246
Charli XCX at GQ's Men of the Year Awards
Charli XCX had the best "makeunder" of 2017. At GQ's Men of the Year Awards, she stepped out with a fresh new chop—blunt and mid-length with bangs—and a much lighter touch on the makeup front. I still can't get over how good this looks!
Katie Holmes at the Z100 Jingle Ball Concert
And last but not least, we have Katie Holmes, who has JUST returned to the cut she had 10 years ago. It's still as adorable on her as I remember it, especially with the fresh makeup she wore to the Z100 Jingle Ball Concert.
