Lucy Hale skincare routine

"The day I turned 21, my skin just went nuts," says Lucy Hale.

In a recent interview with Byrdie, the 'Pretty Little Liars' star, now 28, explained that she was suddenly dealing with cystic adult acne, hormonal issues AND sensitivity.

Not that you'd ever be able to tell, though—because she is now "totally obsessive" about her skincare regimen.

"I have really sensitive skin; I'm acne-prone," she told StyleCaster. "I've struggled with my skin, so I have to keep it really basic."

Well, I'm not sure if I'd describe this as "basic" (ha!), but here's what's involved in her routine:

Molly M. Lucio at Lasky Aesthetics & Laser Center: "She's the shit. I've been seeing her for over five years. I'm really diligent about facials. If I can go once a week, I'll do it. I've tried all different kinds of facial products... but the one thing I have to be consistent about is a facial every two weeks."

Dr. Zein Obagi: "[My biggest splurge is] skincare, definitely—I spend a lot of money on good skincare and a good dermatologist."

Lucy's Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle

"I definitely feel my best when I'm eating whole and raw foods and good protein. But I also believe that life is short and you should eat what you want (in moderation)."

"I try to keep it healthy during the day, but I don't really follow a particular diet, per se. I'm lucky because I like healthier foods…though I definitely have a sweet tooth. I could never cut out sweets. I do try to avoid dairy because it makes me congested. But I love my sugar and I love my coffee. Coffee is a must."

SoulCycle: "I've joined the cult! I used to be so against spinning, but I feel really strong while I'm doing it. Mentally it helps me, too. Even though you're in a class with people—it's still like you're in your own little zone. There's something about it that just works for me, mentally and physically, I just love it."

CorePower Yoga: "I'm really into Core Power's hot yoga—not Bikram, but the step below that—and originally I just wanted a good workout, but it's actually been really good for me. It helps me slow down and it forces me to relax. It was miserable and hard at first, but now I'm addicted to it."

Personal training with Jana Finkbiner: When I'm in LA, I also see a trainer two or three times a week."

Lucy Hale skincare routine

Close-up of Lucy Hale's skin.

So, how do you think Lucy's routine is working for her? Judging by her red carpet close-ups—which couldn't be glowier—I'd say very well!

Here's what I think she's doing right:

  • Being so thorough with her nighttime cleansing—especially since her job involves wearing a lot of heavy makeup, which can lead to breakouts.
  • Combatting the drying effects of her prescription retinoid with the hydrating toner and moisturizers.
  • Being diligent about daily sunscreen.
  • Getting the antioxidant, anti-aging benefits of vitamin C.

If I had to change anything, I would suggest:

  • An over-the-counter retinol, which is safer than Retin-A and just as effective. (Both forms of vitamin A have the same mechanism on the skin; it just takes a little longer for retinol to work!) Shani Darden's Retinol Reform, reviewed here, is a good choice for acne-prone skin.
  • Eliminating the sulfate-based cleansers, scrubs and Clarisonic—all of which can irritate sensitive skin. I'd go with a soap-free cleanser such as Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser, and a gentle silicone brush like the Foreo Luna. Instead of scrubs, a daily gentle exfoliation with salicylic acid, such as Juice Beauty Blemish Serum, would be an excellent way to prevent congestion and breakouts. See here for why I recommend BHAs more than AHAs.
  • Switching to more stable oils that won't oxidize on the skin (which is aging!). Squalane, such as The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane, or jojoba, such as MV Skincare Pure Jojoba are both better options.
  • Considering a silicone-free moisturizer such as LXMI Crème du Nil, reviewed here. I'm not a fan of silicones for these reasons.
  • Switching to a higher-zinc sunscreen, since the one she is using doesn't offer enough UVA protection (see my criteria here). These are my current sunscreen recommendations.
  • NOT eliminating dairy. I explain the connection between dairy and breakouts over here... it's a matter of nutrient deficiency!

I think it's also important to keep in mind that her amazing skin isn't JUST due to the products. Unlike most of us, she's also got a top derm and facialist keeping her skin in tip top shape as well!

But Lucy herself would be the first to admit that she gets a lot of "help." As she told Into the Gloss: "We all obsess about how we look, it's human nature, but it's sort of toxic if you're not careful. It's important for young girls to realize things like we have fake eyelashes on, some of us have extensions, we have good lighting. It's the same thing as Photoshop! We are normal girls, we have zits, and it's important that girls know that. I work with very beautiful people, don't get me wrong, but there are a lot of tricks of the trade."
