As you'll see in a moment, celebs definitely upped their beauty game for the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (a.k.a. the SAG Awards), held Sunday night.
Maybe it was better lighting. Maybe they eased up on the drying mattifying powders. Or maybe they've finally found their beauty mojo, mid-way through awards season.
Whatever the reason, I think you'll be impressed with these looks! Here they are:
What I like: Madeline's pink and red colour scheme in beauty form! This combo is a major trend in fashion right now, but she interpreted it in an entirely fresh way—with vibrant red hair, bold pink blush and creamy, orangey-red lips. (I NEED that shade!) Her skin is matte but not dry, and the soft brows and lashes keep the focus on the colour statement. What I'd change: Nothing.
Madeline is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation (all over) • Foundation (on high planes of face) • Brow powder (as contour) • Blush in So Close • Mascara in Black • False lashes • Brow gel in Brun • Lip balm • Lip liner in Menton • Lipstick in 300 Flesh • Body illuminator • Highlighter (on body)
What I like: Brie's 360-degree blue eyeshadow, which goes from navy at the outer edges to aqua at the inner corners. Even though it's bold, it doesn't overpower the look, since her skin is so fresh and glowy, and her hair is quite casual. I love the fans on those brows! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Yara's deep, glossy red lips with Diana Ross-inspired curls. (Really, that was her hairstylist's reference for this!) As always, her skin looks perfectly smooth and radiant, and she kept things age-appropriate with natural brows and lashes. She's got so much style and poise, how is it even possible she's only 17?! What I'd change: Nothing.
Yara is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye serum • Blush in Rouge Profond • Eyeliner in Hyperblack • Eyeliner in Noir Intense • Lip balm • Lip liner in Séduction • Lipstick in Pirate • Lipstick in Rouge Noir • Lip colour in Rosso Parthenope • Lip gloss in Épique
What I like: Saoirse's iridescent lilac eyeshadow to match her dress, with (gasp!) bare lashes. She keeps skipping mascara, and I fully approve. I think it works because her style is a bit tomboyish, and her eyes already stand out on their own. The darker, perfectly shaped brows help, too. Those of you who hated her Critics' Choice blonde will be happy to see a more natural hair colour here. What I'd change: Nothing.
Saoirse is wearing: Face mist • Moisturizer • Face oil • Eye cream • Foundation in 10 Beige • Blush in Rose Ecrin (on cheeks and edges of lip colour) • Powder in 10 Beige • Eyeshadow in Tissé Beverly Hills • Eyeshadow in Fantasme • Brow gel in Transparent (on brows and lashes) • Brow pencil in Blond Tendre • Lip liner in Pink Sugar • Lip colour in Rosso Parthenope (on lips and cheeks)
Tracee Ellis Ross
What I like: Tracee's matching red lipstick and ruby earrings. She really doesn't need anything else, so I love that she paired this with defined lashes, bare lids, and a close-to-the-head updo. She always looks amazing, but this might be my favourite Tracee look EVER! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Lupita's ridiculously radiant skin—and lips! That peachy-pink shade has such cool dimension thanks to the dab of iridescence. Also notice how her shimmery shadow, all the way up to the brows, picks up on the same colour/texture in her dress. This proves that she doesn't have to be unconventional with her makeup to "wow" us. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Mandy's sexy, messy waves. They're not so "done," like most of what we see on the red carpet. Her skin looks incredible—practically poreless—and the pink shades on her lips and lids are great tones for her. (If only she stuck with that!) What I'd change: I'm not feeling super-enthusiastic about all the colours of eyeshadow happening here. But I can live with them... what I'm REALLY wondering about is why her brow tails are travelling down her cheeks! We can also see unblended bottom lip liner, which makeup artists like to do to fake fullness. Problem is, it's so obvious when you smile!
What I like: Reese's golden glow. There's not just one thing that stands out here—it's the entire effect. She hasn't looked this fab in ages! The sheer pink lips and soft brown smoky eyes really flatter her, as do the side-parted waves (even if they're not "on trend"). Her skin is in fantastic shape as well. What I'd change: I'd just brush the curls to avoid the piecey look.
Reese is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation • Concealer • Blush in Tearose • Blush in Honey • Blush in Nectar • Eyeshadow in Bronzed To Be • Eyeliner in Espresso • Mascara in Intense Black • Lip liner in Papaya • Lipstick in Honeysuckle • Lipstick in Desert Rose
What I like: Margot's messy, textured lob. Pairing casual hair with a dressy gown is one of my favourite red carpet tricks for an effortless vibe. Since her dress was so pale, the makeup was just about amping up her natural colouring. The lipstick is very "your lips, only better," and there's a similar shade around her eyes—with a fun sprinkle of silver glitter. Her brows are fuller than ever, but you know what? I think they look good! Maybe we should all throw away our tweezers. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Olivia's sleek, straight hair and matte rose lipstick. I love that colour, and I love the rounded, precise edges. She's wearing similar tones on her cheeks and eyelids, with a good pair of fluffy lashes. The pearly-pink highlights at her inner corners make it all pop. I don't know if she's ever looked prettier! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Kristen's pink everything (lips, cheeks, earrings, dress!). She definitely suits soft, fresh looks like this, rather than dramatic and edgy. (Compare and contrast with last year's Globes, for example.) The updo gives this a pretty, ballerina vibe. What I'd change: Her brows are basically good, just a little angular at the arches.
Kristen is wearing: Face mask • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation in Buff • Concealer in Light • Bronzer in Sunkissed • Eyeshadow in Cool Plum • Eyeshadow in Cocoa Mauve • Mascara in Black/Brown • Lip balm
What I like: Halle's skin—oh my God! (She's 51, I will remind you.) She always looks amazing in subtle makeup, such as this nude gloss and mascara. You need to see the high ponytail from the back to really appreciate it! Yes, that bottom part is shaved. What I'd change: The purplish shadow is cool, but having so much of it under the eyes tends to look like dark circles.
What I like: Alison's soft lashes, well-blended shadow, and understated lip colour. Her dress had such bold colours, anything too strong on the eyes or lips would've looked garish. I definitely like this updo better than her Critics' Choice shag. What I'd change: The stripe of contour is too dark, and I think brows always look nicer when you can see the hairs (real or faux)—not such a solid, dark mass of colour.
Alison is wearing: Serum • Primer • Foundation • Concealer • Powder • Bronzer • Eyeshadow in Not So Nude • Eyeliner in Espresso • Mascara in Intense Black • Brow pencil in Brownette • Lip balm • Lipstick in Scarlet
What I like: Dakota's glowing (and insanely flawless!) skin, flushed cheeks and high bun. The Fanning sisters do ethereal beauty so well, don't you think? The textures of her brows and lashes are particularly amazing, and I love how the silver shadow brightens her eyes. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Uzo's big, brushed-out waves and pink makeup. It's not a pastel pink—it has punch! I love how it's diffused out from the inner corners of her eyes. On the lips, the dimensional effect is just gorgeous. She has never looked better! What I'd change: Nothing.
Uzo is wearing: Foundation
What I like: Taylor's smoky, shimmery eyes in shades of charcoal and silver. It's funny, from the front I find it heavy, but in this photo, with the light hitting her the right way, I think it's one of her prettiest looks ever! Her skin looks great, and her lips and brows are perfectly understated. The texture and volume at the top of her updo, along with the earrings, ties it all together. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Maya's bright red lips and bouncy, auburn-tinted waves. I love that the skin finish is sheer, and we can still see her freckles. Her eyes are framed by great brows and a wash of silver shimmer. What I'd change: I'd add a touch more coverage around the nose.
What I like: Kate's super-bare and clean makeup. Really, it was the only possible choice with this questionable dress! We can't even see any eyeshadow—just chunky short lashes with soft brows and pink lips. What I'd change: I wish she did softer lashes and more glowing skin, like at the Globes. I'm also not a fan of her hair this time. The tips look frosted!
What I like: Vanessa's messy, textured low ponytail with visible roots. I think the roots work in this instance, because her brows are dark and full (well, at least from a distance!). She looks great with the matte red lipstick in a rounded shape. What I'd change: I do like the strong brows from afar, but up close, they're way too drawn on... and higher than her actual brows!
What I like: Nicole's loose, low side bun (I always did love a side bun). The red lip brings out the blue of her eyes. What I'd change: More moisturizer! Her skin looks so dry this time. Also, while there's nothing technically wrong, I find these updo hairstyles age her a lot. I'd love to see her wear her hair down more often, like how she had it at the AMAs.
Nicole is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation in Natural Ivory • Concealer in Fair • Bronzer in Sunkissed • Blush in Rosy • Eyeshadow palette in Soft Taupe (copper shade) • Eyeliner in Spiced Chocolate • Mascara in Black • Lip gloss in Velvet Wine
What I like: Gina's fresh, radiant skin and glossy red lips. I like the touch of shimmer at her inner corners, and how her hair is a little imperfect—it has some flyaways. This isn't exactly an "on trend" look, but I'm drawn to her healthy, happy vibes! What I'd change: Adding mascara to her lower lashes would help balance her falsies (which aren't the greatest pair). And more care could be taken with the brows (i.e. drawing hair-like strokes instead of a horizontal line straight across the bottom).
What I like: Natalia's bold feathered brows, soft lashes and cat eyes. I like the pinky-brown sculpting of her lids, and her hairstyle is yet another version of the ballerina look that we've seen all over this red carpet. What I'd change: I don't think the liner needed to be quite this strong to get the point across. It would also be elevated if the flicks were straight (not curling).
What I like: Allison's makeup is better than the last two times we saw her, so there's that. The scarlet lipstick is definitely more flattering to her skin tone and eye colour. The eye makeup is okay, too, although I wouldn't have paired them together. What I'd change: Powdery skin with dark lips, hair, eyes and brows just feels very severe. She doesn't need so much! I also don't understand why her hair is wet and in this odd faux bob to one side.
